Hi Londongirl and Graham,
Have you looked in Comyn's New Forest for your Boldre families?

Hi bearkat

I've heard of the book but never managed to see one, began to think it was a myth!! Also informed by someone on another site, a few years back, that my family weren't in it, and therefore did not exist. Well I'm here, so they must have done!!! My Reads and Hardings farmed there and appear on the Census - has anyone out there got a copy of Comyns they could check for me? Have names / years / places -you might hep me break this brickwall. Many thanks.

Hi Londongirl,
I think your family are in Comyn.  It has Stephen READE born 1787 to Sarah.  Her maiden name was DURLE. She remarried to a Mr TINSLEY and lived in Beaulieu Rails, next door-but-one to my ancestors William and ELizabeth (nee THOMAS) HARDING.
You mention HARDINGS - it's a common name in that part of the country but perhaps we are related.
Stephen married Sarah ROLLINS (RAWLINGS) 16 Sept 1821 in Boldre.  I also have RAWLINGS ancestors.
Does this information link to what you have already?
The New Forest Forest is a bit like that.  Everyone seems to be related to everyone else.

If I had any money, I would leave you some in my Will - thank you!! My 3 z gt.grandmother was Elizabeth Harding, 'keeps a cow and farms land', born Boldre but living Beaulieu Rails. She had a son called Samuel and a daughter called Eliza, she (Eliza) married James Read, and had at least two daughters (Elizabeth and Caroline) before he got fed up with the farm, or living with his mother-in-law, or both, and they moved to Millbrook. Caroline was my gt.grandmother and, believe it or not, there are relatives in their late 90's who remember her.

Stephen Reade (born 1787, farmed 4 acres), was living with a housekeeper on the 1861 Census.  His son was also a Stephen, married to Mary and living Bouverie Green, Beaulieu in mid - late 1800's; on the 1871 Census, my gt.grandmother Caroline is staying with them. Stephen and Mary also had children William and Sarah - but then, didn't everybody?? Perhaps this Sarah was named after her grandmother? If I find one more Elizabeth or Sarah, I'll scream.

And you know the weirdest thing about your reply? When Caroline was 18, she got married - to a Charles Edward Thomas - Thomas is my maiden name. the Thomases were settled in Millbrook/So'ton. Perhaps the families already knew each other. Is this an email that can be read by everybody, or just you and me?

Everything on rootschat except posts on the lighter side (I think) are visible for everyone to read and will show up on any search engine.
If you wish to say anything in private it's best to send a personal message.

How do you send a personal message? I've only used RootsChat once before today and that was to post my interest.

If you click on the name, in red, to the left of the message, the personal profile of the poster is displayed. There should be an option to send that person a personal message (I think).  Click on that and type away and send.
Any replies you recieve can be checked by looking at the top of your screen where it says hello Londongirl you have ? new messages.

Thank you - I wasn't going to ask anything that personal; I think the word these days is 'sensitive'. I've been doing the family history for years but only found this site a short time ago. Can you see any links between your Hardings and mine? I also have South Stoneham in my tree - small world. If only I'd known all this when I lived in Winchester..... have you any idea how to search for pub records? My Hardings apparently owned one in So'ton, have been told it was lost during Blitz but no one can remember the name. The 'sensitive' subject I wanted to mention was the eldest son of my gt.grandmother Caroline and her husband Charles Thomas. A cousin and I discovered him (as you do) on the Census, living with his Read grandparents; the oldest members of the family have been very cagey, suggesting that they'd never heard of him, then that there had been 'rumours he existed', now they maintain silence! Anu suggestions where to go next?

I forgot to say that when James Read left the New Forest, it was to work for the railways, which he did for the rest of his life. His 'mystery' grandson, Charles, was working at a Mineral Drinks Manufactory in 1901. No idea what it was called. If there is anyone out there who can make a link with my Thomases, apart from the one who became my gt.grandfather, the others entirely disappear. He had a lot of siblings (all girls), they must have gone somewhere! Thank you again bearkat, you've made my day!

Hi Londongirl,
You should be able to find the pub.  Try looking in a trade directory or Kelly's.  If you don't get any joy there you should try Southampton City Archives who have a list of pub licences issued.  My great grandparents ran a couple of pubs in Southampton. Found a lovely photo at the Southampton archives.

Were they your Harding ancestors? My Mum's family had pubs coming out of their ears - sadly, none got passed down this way :(

No, my HAMERTONS ran The Angel in Palmerston Road and the New Forest Stag in Amoy Street.  I think  they also ran another pub in Northam.

Please stay in touch, we're probably related somewhere along the line. I've just had some bad news and I think I've been given the job of relaying it round the family. This is one of the reasons I started the family tree, before it was too late to ask advice from older family members. Thank you again.

NB If I'm not on RootChat for a bit, my email address is there.

Thanks for your message. I did check my profile, and my email address was on there? I'm afraid my brain's not working properly at the moment - the last message you sent, there was no click to reply button - never mind, I expect I'm doing something cack-handed, as we say in East London. We've wondered about this son being illegitimate, but it had never bothered the family before! We wondered whether a) he was handicapped in some way (wouldn't necessarily have been put on Census), or b) maybe his Mum had a vision of 10 kids before she was 30, and couldn't cope.  That would have made me run away. My Stephen Reade, born 1787 - I'm suspecting he made a prior marriage (or not, as the case may be), as his son Stephen was born in 1813 when he was 26 - and some years before he married. I've got numerous ancestors who had several kids before they married, or just had the kids and didn't bother marrying at all - my Mum said it had to do with them being 'rural'!! The bad news I got was a bit worse than a death itself - we've been told to wait for one. I get all the nicest family jobs. Doing this is keeping my mind off it, thank you very much. I shall try and get back on here again tomorrow, so if you think of anything, just hit send.  londongirl

I am writing the history of a family who owned a contry house outside Brockenhurst in the new forest called Rhinefield House, the 1901 census shows Charles Worthy as Groom and domestic, he was 19 and born in Basingstoke, any use?? I also have  a photo somewhere of him (I thinks its him) standing by a horse and the owners son aged about 2 sitting on it and I asume as he was the groom that he would be holding the horse, if any interest I will try an ddid it out. there are other (Worthy's) in the area so I will did around,

Hi Graham I have quite a lot of info on the Worthy family in Boldre and Brockenhurst from 1798 onwards also a little on Sparks aka. Wing and worthy.I would be most interested to know what you have found out maybe we could fill in the gaps. The only main bit that I am stuck on is from 1760 to 1798 and from 1731 back.the only thing I have seen is a recorded birth for a Marmaduke Wothy in Plymouth his father was Thomas Edwin Worthy of 7 Lambshay Hill. This doesnt mean he was any relation of course as there are quite a few Marmadukes in Somerset as you may know in Curry Rivel but the one I am trying to find was I believe married to someone called Elizabeth Monk in Brockenhurst circa 1731.I hope this is some help.
