Hello
Could anyone please advise me how to access Essex Assizes Records? I'm hoping to access online as I am in Australia. I have a SEAX subscription but haven't seen them there.
I'm trying to find out more about a Robert Gosling tried at the Essex Assizes on 5th March 1832 then sent to Australia.
I was also hoping to find a newspaper article about the crime (committed with a William Cambrell) but have not found anything yet.

Robert Gosling and William Cambrell sentenced 7 years transportation; Cambrell for larceny and Gosling for handling.

Assize records are not held locally but are at the National Archives, Kew. They are not online, and copies cannot be ordered online.
To access them you will need a researcher, either from Kew's own research service, as explained here ...

... or have a researcher visit Kew on your behalf (probably cheaper).
That said, assize records at this date rarely include any details of what was said in court. A newspaper report will be your best bet, if you can find one.

Prior to his conviction Robert was aquited of larceny in 1828.

These Assizes nearly always get a mention in the Essex Chronicle,the micro film for this can be found in the Chelmsford Central Library, never very sure why they are not at the Essex Records as the area given over to it at the Library consists of two viewers and a cabinet for the films, look up their web site I think if you know the date of the court case they will look it up for you,I looked up a road accident about two years ago and found it within 10 mins because the person knew the date it happened.

Have you tried the site.......... convictrecords.com.au.... It says they were deported on the Planter on the 13th June 1832 and arrived in New South Wales 13th February 1833 it should give you some more help I will try to check the papers at our local records office in Colchester on Monday when I go into town and see what I can find for you Happy Hunting

Have a look on the British Newspaper Archive online (you can also access it online on Find My Past too).
I've found LOADS (possibly too much, actually!) about the criminal activities of my relatives in the papers.
