Title: Barnburgh - James Kitchingman married 1724
Post by: bolttail on Sunday 23 February 14 17:21 GMT (UK)
The records for the chapelry of Woolley in the parish of Royston has the following entry. "Marriage 1724 James Kitchingman of the Psh of Barmbrough & Mary Robinson of this town were married Apr 7th."
Has anyone any information as to where James was born/baptized or who his parents were? Failing this, has anyone got any sensible suggestions that I could consider? The IGI has no Barnbrough (Barnburgh or any other spelling) events prior to 1725. I've been stuck at this point for years and this is my last hope.

According to the "fount of all knowledge on Yorkshire" - GENUKI - the parish registers for Barnburgh are deposited at Doncaster Archives from 1557, where they also hold typed transcripts.  And according to GENUKI, the "dreaded" IGI has coverage for Baptisms and Marriages from 1557.

Chapelry of Woolley - parish registers at WYAS, Wakefield from 1651, and IGI from 1600, with gaps, for Baptisms and Marriages.  Transcripts and Indexes for Yorkshire Parish Register Society from 1600.

Many thanks 'BumbleB'. I know that the IGI isn't exactly the most complete and accurate set of records, however, if James Kitchingman had his family origins in Barnburgh I would expect to find the odd pre 1725 Kitchingman name in the parish records. I suspect that the numerous Kitchingmans that resided in the said parish over the next hundred plus years were all descendants of James and Mary. If anyone knows different, please put me right. As a look at the records in Doncaster would be a round trip of 600 miles for me, I don't think I'll be dashing over there any time soon. Otherwise I'd have a good look through the burials.

Thanks 'keyboard 86' for the Illingworth baptism. That's one I didn't have. I'll have to add him to my list of 'possibles'.

The centre of 'all things Kitchingman' at that time appears to have been Leeds, but I can find no connection with that group.

I appreciate that this is a rather old thread but I have a suggestion about James Kitchingman married 1724.

By way of background, I have spent a lot of time over the last few years researching the Kitchingman family. I have not been able to connect the following three branches.

Some from the branch around Carlton Husthwaite in the North Riding, migrated to Leeds, Calderdale and Pontefract during the C17 and were mainly involved in various aspects of the wool trade. Later, other family members migrated to Whitby and Ripon.

A second branch was from around Shadwell near Leeds. At the end of the C16 some of them migrated to Norwich and East Anglia.

A third branch, who anachronistically I call the South Yorkshire branch, were from around Wath upon Dearne from the early C17. this is about 8 miles from Barnburgh/Barnborough.

According to the parish register,  James Kitchingman son of John, of Masbrough, was baptised at Rotherham on 4 April 1698. This would make him the right sort of age for marriage in 1724 and is only about 10 miles from Barburgh.

I hope this helps. If you are interested, I have started a blog recounting some of the more interesting stories about the Kitchingmans at www.earlymodernkinship.com (http://www.earlymodernkinship.com)
