Title: Emma Gray - baptisms lookup 1858ish Heigham, Norwich
Post by: ribbo39 on Saturday 22 February 14 23:26 GMT (UK)
Hi folks,

My g.grandmother Emma Gray was born in Feb 1858 in Distillory Street, Heigham, Norwich to parents Elijah & Caroline.

She married Edwin Artis in St.Philips church, Heigham in 1873 but as I understand it, this church didn't exist in 1858/9.

So does anyone know where she was likely to have been baptised and when?

Any help would be very welcome.

Alan

She was only 15 in 1873 - I'm not querying your dates as I know they are correct - just commenting on her age considering Edwin was 10yrs older than her.

Hi carol,
Your are correct. She had her 1st child at 15yrs & 4 months and none of her family were present at the wedding apart from her brother who was listed as her father in the register!!

Hi there

Some history of the Heigham churches http://www.norfolkchurches.co.uk/heighamphilip/heighamphilip.htm and it does seem that St Philip's wasn't built at the time.

You could try St Bartholomew Heigham or as I think her parents Elijah Gray and Caroline Houghton married at St Margaret's Norwich 5 Dec 1835 (source www.freereg.org.uk) you might try there. Some of Elijah and Caroline's early children appear to be baptised at Norwich St Giles so that's another possibility.

Hi shirl,
Thank you for the info on the Norfolk churches very interesting reading.

Looked into the IGI original registers for St.Giles and found 3 of their baptisms and
I have tried the IGI including going thru the Bishop's transcripts, but,  unfortunately only a few for Heigham were recorded and nothing that was of interest to me with the name Gray/Grey.
I also tried FreeREG and FindMyPast again without successs and also Anc...y to see if they had any luck.

I couldn't find St.Bartholomew Heigham amongst the registers

Still I do have her birth cert. and was hoping I could fill some blank spaces.

I think you'll find that the records for St Bartholomews were destroyed during the second world war. You could try and see if there are any relevant Bishop Transcripts from that time.
