Can anyone explain what this is in the Seren Cymru 9 November 1877, it seems Benjamin Jones died in May .

I am not the best at Welsh but I have an idea, it may seem rubbish but again Welsh is not my thing! :P I will research it and if I find anything interesting I'll PM you. ???

In Memory of Benjamin Jones, son of Mr W Ryland Jones, Cefnmawr, who died May 27 1877 aged 21.

known in Welsh as Caneuon or pennillion coffa.
If you want a rough translation I could give it a go. (just remember I am no poet)

Probably because it was written sometime after his death.
I have some written in time for the funeral and others some months later.
Will have a go at translating it now.

Here goes.
Death. Oh, how cruel his behaviour.
Despite mankind's deep grief
he is deaf to their cries.
He comes boldly and impartially
on his perplexing, powerful course.
He strikes the noble in his palace
Just as the poor, lower ranks.
A deep and terrible wound
to the tender feelings of a mother and father
is the loss of a devout son.
A virtuous , gentle, good son.
The golden characteristics of
the affectionate brother laid
in the cold grave to sleep
when he was only aged twenty one.
May his grieving parents
have the company of the divine sympathiser.
May their hearts be filled
with Christ's lively comforts.
He's the one who grew accustomed
to many kinds of sorrows
when He was in our world serving
in order to comfort mankind.
Told you I was no poet, give me a physics textbook to translate anyday !!!

What makes it so sad is that he died of smallpox !! It`s reported that he came home from Liverpool , fell sick and died ten days later at his home of semi confluent small pox . :(
Would it have been to keep the outbreak contained in the home than risk it spreading in the district.

I can't answer your question but I know there was a severe outbreak of smallpox in Liverpool circa 1870-1875.Here is just one example of many reports

I believe there were deaths in an adjacent property to relatives of mine in Bryneglwys in 1872,following contact with people having visited Liverpool.
