I am trying to locate the parents to James Gilfillan b1823.
I have him from the 1841 census, marriage, census etc, but
would like to try and find his parents and find out who he was
with on the 1841 census - parents or grandparents - there is a
John and Elizabeth Gilfillan, aged 60 and 65, not born in the
county, at the same address - Angel Court (?), Middlesex. James is listed
as being born in the county.

Check here.

Looks to include burial of John and Elizabeth.

Once again Rootschat has been invaluable to me! I ordered a search on the GRO for the death register for Elizabeth Gilfillan period 1842-1844 - I received the cert today but it would appear to be the wrong one. I came back here and clicked on the familysearch website as suggested and discovered that there are actually 2 Elizabeth Gilfillan's listed in 1843 (I left it for the GRO to search hoping I'd get the right one (do not think I saw 2 listings on the Freebmd site) - Anyŵay GRO are going to listen to my order (!) to make sure I did not mention the location of Holborn (!) and then hopefully I'll get a refund and can order the other cert. If I had not come back here to for a re-think and perusal I would have just accepted that it was not my Elizabeth.
Thanks again all the helper's out there :)

Hi Jackie, I know you have been talking to 4th cousin David and hope that we have now sorted out Dorothy Maud to your satisfaction!! I have been checking facts on Ancestry and was horrified to found a members tree which had his father dying in 1808 when James wasn't born until 1823 and his mother dying in 1826 when both parents were on the 1841 census. Whoops!!! So do be careful. I am sure that his parents are John and Elizabeth - I have his original wedding certificate in my possession, so we are sure of John and I have a marriage for him to Elizabeth STOPPS in1803 at Christchurch, Newgate London. This bothers me a bit as he was born so long afterwards, but they could have lost some kids in between, so I'm not sure about that and will look again. John was a printer by the way. He would have been quite old when James was born if we accept the 1776 date of birth and I don't like it or the marriage much, do you? I'll look again and get back to you. All the best Gill

Hello
There's another marine store dealer from St Clement Danes -Thomas Gilfillan born c 1820
His baptism is on line at St Giles in the Fields 7.7.1819
Thomas son of Thomas and Elizabeth clerk.
So I do think you need James's marriage to Mary Ann Spikin Strand Sep 1843 1 375
That should give a father and you can then work out of James is the son or grandson of John and Elizabeth.
Possible burial for John Gilfillan 22.1.1843 St Clement Danes age 66 3 Star Crt
For Elizabeth one of the deaths 1843 is buried at ST Mary le Strand 16.7.1843 at Russell St burial ground age 62 no 19 Drury crt.
I'm assuming that's the other lady and John and Elizabeth would have been buried together at St Clements.
Children I can find for them
Elizabeth Margaret 24.4./17.5 1807 Christ Church Newgate St
Hannah and Sarah 3.3.1811 St Andrew Holborn Union St.
Sarah was buried at Spa Fields 15.9.1812 age 1 and Elizabeth 30.4.1810.
It's not impossible that James was their youngest.
ps looking at the criminal records Thomas born in 1819 has a brother William born 1817 ,both found not guilty of stealing a picture 1837.
James found not guilty of embezzlement 21.10.1839

Hi there,
I have the original marriage certificate for James and Mary Spikin, so that is beyond doubt. From that, his father John was a printer and I have also a reference to his apprenticeship in a data base of the Staioners company. James , James Francis and James Alexander have got thoroughly confused in out discussions but I have tabulated it all and have it straight, I hope. I am struggling to fit the right Elizabeth to our John, but think it is Elizabeth Stopps. James is his son, James Francis my great grandfather and James Alexander my great uncle. The problem we are trying to solve is one of the Dorothys. I am sure in my own mind that the one we want is the daughter of James Alexander and Kate Taylor and think that my best move is to send the marriage cert of Dorothy ( Doris)?and Bernard Nicholas, which I know is fact so will do that. The James and the Dorothy's are bugging me!!

Sorry, should have added Star Court is right, so that death is right, the twins fit as well.

Just catching up - the daughters mentioned are not daughters of our John and Elizabeth - I believe that they are the daughters of the John Gilfillan and Elizabeth who go to New Zealand at some stage (doing this from memory) - this John Gilfillan was murdered I think in New Zealand - he originally came from Scotland (I think) - there are articles about this particular John Gilfillan - the line goes way back to Scotland family names Buchanan (from research 4 years ago).
Our John and Elizabeth are from Star Court and did die very close together - Gill Price - I think you and I need to message each other to catch our trees up !! We are obviously 'connected' somewhere along the line. Looking forward to it!

I hope you don't might if I barge in on your thread - you mention a database of printers and stationers. Can you tell me where you found it please. I'm hoping there might be details of a Joseph William Percy Newsom who was a printer in London, born Leeds around 1800.

On Ancestry. In the left hand pane, where you have access to newspapers etc. i typed in John Gilfillan and bingo!!
-
you mention a database of printers and stationers.
hurworth ... in addition to the database mentioned above, which relates only to the Stationers' Company, you might find the BBTI useful ...
