Title: Thomas Thorneycroft B1865
Post by: senseideb1973 on Wednesday 19 February 14 19:57 GMT (UK)
Hi ,

My GGF Thomas Thorneycroft B1865 married Martha nee Pepper in 1886
According to the 1911 Census they had 9 children ; 6 survived & 3 died

How do I find out who the 3 that died were ?

Thanks   ???

If I were you I'd start from the marriage in 1886 and make a list of the Dates of Birth of the children that you know and see if there are any large gaps between them. Then look in Freebmd  http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ and see if you can find any suitable births and deaths in the right area. Luckily it isn't a common name like Smith. Also check previous censuses in case any are mentioned.

There are more Thorneycrofts than you would think having children in the district - I've spotted quite afew infant deaths that could be theirs in that period

Some could probably be eliminated by their births being too close to a child who survived. It won't be an easy task though unless you can find baptisms that give parents' names. The other children's births were registered in Wolstanton.

Looking at those there is time for a birth between 1887 and 1890 and between 1890 and 1894 and possibly between 1894 and 1897. After that the births are about every 2 years.

For instance there is this birth/death

Births Dec 1888
THORNEYCROFT    Emma Jane        Wolstanton    6b   91

Deaths Dec 1888
THORNEYCROFT    Emma Jane    0    Wolstanton    6b   69

Have you got the birth certificates of the other children, or were you able to find baptisms?

I saw this one also

Staffordshire Birth indexes for the years: 1892 Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference THORNEYCROFT Emma Wolstanton Newcastle-Under-Lyme PEPPER WOL/054/28

which is more likely do you think  ???

As the mother's maiden name was Pepper, that looks a good possibility

Hi Sensei

Following on from the chat, I carried on trying to find children etc. That was the child that I found that was one of the deaths that we needed to find, so I agree.
