Title: Meaning of a Street name .
Post by: gowjani on Wednesday 19 February 14 15:55 GMT (UK)
At one time I lived in CRAIGBANZO Street , Faifley , Clydebank . Does anyone have any idea as to what the name means ? The first part I can understand , it`s the second bit that`s the puzzle . Was it the surname of someone called Craig ? Any ideas welcome . Thanks , Graham.

Hi,

Have you contacted the local council? I think they are responsible for choosing street names.

Banzo is a surname, see link.  So possibly street is named after someone called Craig Banzo.  This is sheer speculation/guesswork on my part

Hi! Street names are named after people which is correct. But before you make the mistake of contacting the Council how about you ask the local people. Maybe the elderly will know who Craig was? ;D Remember streets are named after popular and/or famous people, Eg: Victoria Avenue, we all know who Queen Vic was right?

Having searched S.P. /  I.G.I. / Free BMD, I cannot find a Craig Banzo. Loads of other Banzo's, including a group of them in New Orleans  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Nothing which I personally saw. I note that it is mentioned in Appendix 3, Kilpatrick in the Thirteenth Century as you said. I personally, through basic curiosity, took another route, and just for fun, added my sence of mirth. The sun is shining, has been all day, little or no wind, and no rain. Spring has sprung.

Thanks for all the replies . As the street was named in the early 1950`s most of the "elderly" are no longer with us . The Council could not help . The best they could offer was that it may have been named after a nearby natural feature . After checking an old map they were none the wiser. Possibly the name was picked up wrongly in the past & was changed inadvertently . Graham .

If you had read Stampstone's reply, and read the content of the link he supplied and the reference I also mentioned, you would have found that his explaination was correct, as this is also the case in relation to other street names and districts in the area.
