Title: Union workhouse for Walton On Thames?
Post by: simsbabe on Monday 17 February 14 13:43 GMT (UK)
I am trying to trace back my great,great grandmother Sarah Hoare (was Lee) and found her burial records on ancestry. It says her abode was "Union Workhouse"..so I assumed, maybe wrongly, that it would of been Chertsey Union Workhouse, but she doesnt come up on the list that the surrey council website has ??? Have I got the wrong workhouse? or is it just that her name isnt recorded? I dont know when she was admitted, but she died in July 1869 amd was buried at St Marys in WOT on the 13/08/1869. I'm hoping someone can help point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance x

Hi

Her death was registered in Chertsey and these are the areas covered by that RD

And here's a link to the Chertsey WH

If it is this list on Surrey History Centre website that you are looking at they appear to be relating to the late 1890's early 1900's

The link on workhouses that CaroleW has given you states

Records
Surrey History Centre, 130 Goldsworth Road, Woking, Surrey GU21 6ND.
Holdings include Guardians' minutes (1835-1874, 1876-1930 );
Admissions and discharges (1894-1932 with gaps);
Births (1866-1914);
Deaths (1867-1932);
Garden and pig accounts (1924-32); etc.

It is quite likely that this information is not online, you may have to contact Surrey H.C. (or visit)

There was a workhouse in Ashley Road, Walton-On-Thames.

When it closed people Were sent to Chertsey and a school was built on the site.

I’m not sure about dates but it may explain things.

I only looked at the date as I could not remember posting on that thread and it is fairly local to me.  ;D
