Hi everyone
I am looking for a John Winstanley who was born abt 1838 in Liverpool. He died in Australia in 1894 and his death certificate states his parents were named John Winstanley and Amelia. I have searched around and I can't find his parents anywhere. I am pretty sure Amelia is correct as his mother's name because he went onto use that name for his first born daughter.
If anyone could help that would be great.
Thanks
Erin

Hi
Do you know when he arrived in Australia? Have you checked passenger lists to see if he was with a John and Amelia? Did he marry in Australia?
Heather

There are quite a few little John Winstanley's about in 1841 but I can't see any with mother Amelia :(
Couple of family trees with him on but give different parents. One John & Amelia and one Thomas & Margaret.
Same bride on both - Mary Irvine is that correct?

Is this their first child?
Amelia Alice Winstanley
birth: 16 January 1870
christening: 23 October 1875 All Saints, St. Kilda, Victoria, Australia
residence: 1870 St. Kilda, Victoria, Australia

Hi everyone
Sorry for the late reply, work always gets in the way of genealogy :)
Amelia Alice was their third child, they had another daughter named Amelia May who was born and died in about 1865. Mary Irvine was his wife that is correct, they were married in Victoria, Australia in 1864. Heather, I have check the passenger lists but so far have not been able to find him, I only know he arrived before 1864 as that's when he was married in Australia. I have searched and searched but I have not been able to find any children born to a Amelia and John Winstanley in the Liverpool region at all.
Thanks everyone
Erin :)

How sure are you that he was from Liverpool?
-
Not 100% sure, he may have been born elsewhere.

There's a Stanley family in Sheffield (Brightside Bierlow) in the 1861 census that might be worth looking at.
There's John aged 24 (so born 1836/7) born Hemsworth, with father John and mother Amelia. head of household is brother George.

there is this John Winstanley baptised march 1838 in Liverpool
there is also a John Winstanley born sept qtr 1838 in Liverpool on freebmd - ...can we find him on the 1841 census to see who his parents were - maybe then we can see if we rule out this Liverpool born John ???

I have checked out the 1861 Census that could be a possibility I suppose Winstanley and Stanley it's not a huge jump. I have looked at all the John Winstanley's born in the Liverpool area thanks to the Lancashire parish clerk site but I have found no John's that have parents called Amelia and John.
I am completely lost on this one. It will definitely take more time and research
Thanks so much for everyone's help, it's much appreciated.

The John Stanley from Hemsworth appears to be still in Brightside Bierlow in 1871, married with a young family; so not him it seems.

Hi erinb1983
The 1841 census shows a John Winstanley born in 1839 in Lancashire, however his parents are Thomas b 1811 and Margaret b 1816.. He has a sister called Ann b 1834 and a brother called James b 1837 . They live at Brownlow's Buildings, Prescot , sutton, Lancashire. Hope this helps :)

Thanks for that info, I will check it out

Hi, I think the John Winstanley listed as a watchmaker on the 1847 and 1848-49 census in Geelong, Victoria is probably the father of John Winstanley born Liverpool c1838. Have not been able to find the immigration record for the family, but likely to be under NSW immigration records given it is an early record. John Winstanley's mother is definitely Amelia on his death certificate, but like you I can find no record of her in Lancashire or Victoria. Is possible she died on ship during voyage, but not listed on Victoria's marine index. Further complication is that John Winstanley Jnr death certificate 1894 shows he had been in Victoria for 42 years, which would be 1852, but these dates are registered by the spouse or descendants and therefore not necessarily correct. I am researching the Winstanley family for the 150th anniversary of Cheltenham Pioneer Cemetery in Cheltenham, Victoria. The first born child of John Winstanley Jr and Mary Irvine, Amelia May Winstanley, was the 11th burial at the cemetery in 1865. Would appreciate any info anyone can give me to assist with this family.

John Winstanley born c1838 Liverpool arrived 6 December 1854 via the Royal Mail Steamer 'Argo' Melbourne Vic as a single British no other family shown. Originally recorded as Wenstanley, but Public Records Victoria have since corrected. This ship did not carry a lot of passengers which is why it has been difficult to find him. Married Mary Irvine Brighton Victoria 1864 and died 1 December 1894 56 years old from Phthisis (TB) at family home 25 Bayview Street, Prahran. Death cert says buried St Kilda Cemetery, but they have no record. Some of his children buried there. Any other info gratefully accepted as the Winstanleys have been a challenge. I doubt his mother is Amelia, unless it is a second name, even though recorded death cert., no record found in UK or Australia. Hope that helps.
