Title: Family of William Oman
Post by: kakr100 on Saturday 15 February 14 05:52 GMT (UK)
Hi,
I'm looking for some information on an ancestor of mine named William Oman. He was born in 1761 in Sandwick, Orkney. He immigrated to Canada in 1783 to work for the Hudson Bay Co. He married a Chipewyan woman and had two children. In 1805 I believe he returned to Scotland and left his children behind in Canada.

Thank You

on the 1821 census for Stromness there is a William Oman aged 50 labourer, living with Helen Pottinger aged 62, cant find him on any later census,s for Orkney

The only Oman in Sandwick on the 1821 census is Jannet aged 60.

Hello kakr100, it sounds like you and I are researching the same ancestor.  William Oman while stationed at Churchill indeed had two children, William Oman b. abt 1801 Churchill (my gg-grandfather), and Mary Oman.  I have always wondered what happened to him after he returned home.  It is good to see your post and I would appreciate you getting in touch.

Hello kakr100, it sounds like you and I are researching the same ancestor.  William Oman while stationed at Churchill indeed had two children, William Oman b. abt 1801 Churchill (my gg-grandfather), and Mary Oman.  I have always wondered what happened to him after he returned home.

There were two existing William Omand's, one was stationed at York Factory from Stromness, Orkney and the other was stationed at Churchill from Sandwick, Orkney.  I see no HBC biography sheets made on them but the HBC archives did send me a breakdown of there services.  Here I will just list William Oman stationed at Churchill's:

1783/92 Labourer - Churchill Dist Psh Sandwick

1799 Psh Stromness (Servants Contracts)

Try different spellings in your search too - OMAND and OMOND are both common in Orkney.
