Hi all,
Can anyone help me solve 'name' problem please.
An ancestor died and was buried 11th Sept. 1828 in Worcestershire, His name name on Headstone and P.R. at Bap. was Joseph Knowles.
I have now found a copy of a wiil on line for a John Knowles same town etc. with codicil signed April 1827 and the will proved 22nd Sept 1828.
The name in the margin heading the will is John Knowles with what looks like LO in script of course after it. Also after his signature 'John Knowles' there appears in brackets ( LS ) or Maybe ( LO ).
Does this mean that he had adopted the name John or was known by both names ?
Any help greatly appreciated.

I would say it is 40 after his name not LO

Yes Stan I agree but it appears next to his sig. on 10th line up from the end of the will.

Having looked again Stan yes each will is numbered after the name.

If you are able to page backwards and forwards in that collection of copied wills you can see that they all have numbers below the names, I don't know what this notation means but I would guess that the clerk is referencing to an index or to the location of the original will.

Ah, OK - I  hadn't refreshed the page. When I replied the message just said

Yes Stan I agree but he was 72 when he died and it appears next to his sig. on 10th line up from the end of the will.

These wills are transcripts, not the actual wills, and what appears after his 'signature' is common to other wills e.g. the one just before that of John Knowles, it is completely different to the number 40. It is LS and is put after every signature.

The L.S. stands for Locus Sigilli [the place where the seal was on the original document].

Thanks All for your help, I was barking up the wrong tree.
Looks as if Joseph & John died virtually at the same time in 1828 , I know Joseph's Grave but not yet located John's burial / Grave.
