My G G Uncle Matthew Mills was born in 1859 Llanidloes, Montgomeryshire. He was a painter and glazier. In the 1881 census he was living with his mother Jane & stepfather in Llanidloes but by 1891 there is no trace of him. There is a possible marriage to a Sarah Lloyd bt, as yet, that is unconfirmed.
I am assuming then that somewhere between 1881 and 1891 he emigrated to the USA and would be extremely grateful if someone could direct me to the right places to try and find him!!!!
HELP HELP ??? :D
Thank you
Jan Lloyd

Thank you very much for looking up Matthew Mills in the various US census. I've hit a brick wall here, think I will have to get back in touch with my cousin who originally told me that he emigrated to the USA. Much more information is needed!!!!!!!!
I've just had one final thought - if he spelt his name Mathew (with 1 T) would that have made a difference with your search?
Kind regards
Jan

It sure would make a difference, will chek it out for you.

Thanks Hoka for looking up the two Mathew Mills in the 1910 US census. Could you just confirm the following for me please:- where it says how long each Mathew has been married, next to that it says US 1879 (& 1884). Is that the year they arrived in the USA? if it is I can rule out Mathew No 1 because he is in Wales in the 1881 British Census.
Jan
-
Yes, that the year they came here.
I thought the second one was the best bet also.
Hoka.
-
Thanks very much Hoka for confirming the year of entry.
Must try and find out now whether Mathew was indeed married to an Annie. It would be wonderful if the second 1910 entry was my Mathew.
-
Don't let the name Annie stop you. over here names didn't matter much, my aunt was Dorothy Lillian and I found her listed as Doris, My mother was Charlotte and went by Lottie, my sister is Lillian Ethel but known as Sue, I'm known as Hoka but name is John.
Good Luck, if I can help, let me know.
Hoka.

Hello again Hoka (John!)
Thanks for the names advice - I will bear that in mind when doing my searching.
Thanks also for the offer of any other help - I just might need it because the American side of my tree is completely new territory to me!!!!

I have just found out about the Castle Garden site http://www.castlegarden.org/quick_search_detail.php?p_id=5452478 and found a possible for Mathew:
Mathew Mills, Laborer Age 22 Male
Arrived 23 April 1883
Origin: England
Port: Liverpool & Queenstown
Ship: City of Berlin
Destination: Michigan
Hoka very kindly looked at the US census for me and found this possible entry:
1910 Columbiaian Co., Ohio, 3-Wd, East Liverpool.
Mathew Mills, 47, Eng., married 22 yrs. US 1884, Expressman.
Annie, wife, 42, Eng., married 22 yrs. US 1887.
John, son, 20, Oh.
Elsie A., dau, 16, Oh.
Emma, dau, 11, Oh.
William H., son, 8, Oh.
Mary E., dau, 6, Oh.
Sarah J., dau, 3, Oh.
Thomas M., son, 1mo., Oh.
I would welcome some more advice how I would go about tracing some more information about Mathew. Does it say anywhere on the US census whether someone wqs born in Wales. Mathew was born in Llanidloes, Montgomeryshire.,
Many thanks

Thank you very much for the 1900 information.
I am going to keep all this on file until I can find some more definite proof of when he actually went to the US, and whether he married before he emigrated.

Thanks very much Yvonne. I do appreciate you taking the time to look for Matthew for me.
I have a couple of possibilities for Matthew's wife - Sarah Lloyd or Mary Ann Bound. Only possibilities at the moment because I need to request the marriage certificate to see whether I have the right Matthew, his father was a
Mat(t)hew too :-\ On the North Wales BMD marriage record his name is spelt Mathew, with only one T.
Would it be possible to search for either Sarah/Mary Mills with Mat(t)hew, and in the meantime I think I'll send for the marriage certificate. At least if I use the local register office, I can specify the father's name, and get my £7 back if it's wrong!!!!
Just a final point - when he was in Montgomeryshire he was a painter & glazier :-\
Thanks once again
Jan
-
Mary Ann Bound might have gone by the name Annie. ;)
-
Now that's a good idea Sue, I hadn't thought of that :D
Thank you
