James RUSSELL was an ironmonger in Farnham, Surrey.
He was born ca 1755.
On 6 September 1785 he married Jane Marchant. They had a son, John Russell (1786-1834).
About 1794/5 he married for a second time. His spouse was Mary (maiden name not known).
They had three children - Martha baptised 2 October 1795; James baptised 2 June 1797; and Richard baptised 20 May 1801 - all born in Farnham.
If anyone is researching this family and has any information concerning the parentage of James the ironmonger, I would appreciate hearing from you. His father's name may have been John Russell.

Dear Trish
Thank you for your response and information concerning the family of John Russell.
My husband is of the opinion that one of his ancestors was connected to the Duke of Bedford. I'd appreciate any suggestions as to how I could follow this up.
Are you a Moderator with RootsChat?

Hi mrussell,
No I am not a Moderator. I just like trying to help people with their Trees.
As to the connection to the Duke of Bedford you would have to find a Tree for the Family to see if there was a connection to yours.
From experience most of these Family stories seem to be just that and not based on any fact.

In case you don't have the details of the 6 Sep 1785 marriage in Farnham, the Surrey FHS Marriages CD has James otp and Jane as from Frensham, Surrey - might help you find her, if you haven't already.
I can't see a Surrey marriage for James to a Mary pre 1795. The nearest is probably too late and in the wrong place:
8 Jan 1797 St Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey James Russell & Mary Bridges (no other info).
I don't have a Surrey Baptisms CD but I do have the Burials - and I can't see either James, first wife Jane or second wife Mary's burial in Farnham. Did they move away?
My name is Russell and I've been asked more than once (usually when I'm 'down south') if I'm related to the Dukes of Bedford!! To the best of my knowledge, I'm not!
