Would some kind person be able to visit a library to do a death notice/obituary look up for me please.
The exact date of death is not known but the ashes of Ian Malcolm MACKINNON were buried in the Mountain View Cemetery, Vancouver on 23rd September 1980. The burial was arranged by Jenetts Funeral Home, Barrie, Ontario. Mr. MacKinnon was 76 years old and married. The person authorised to arrange the funeral was his wife, Clara MacKinnon of 412 Mimosa Drive, Sandy Cove, Stroud, Ontario.
I am assuming that the death occurred not too long prior to the burial of the ashes. As other family members had been buried in the same cemetery I am also assuming that arrangements for the ashes burial had been made well in advance.
Would be grateful for any information.

Have you seen that the 1962 and 1957 Canada Voter's Lists
there is Ian D. MacKinnon and Mrs. Clara P. MacKinnon, and Ian M. MacKinnon at
536 Melbourne Ave in the district of Carleton, which is just Ottawa, Ontario now.
In 1957 it lists occupation as Disp. Corp. and in 1962 as Executive.
I realize this is not the information you were asking for, but perhaps if this
is the same person, that this could mean an obituary also ran in the Ottawa Citizen. (It actually says Claire in 1957 and Clara P. in 1962) -- Although the Toronto Star would be likely where the obituary would have been.

I searched the Globe and Mail online, but couldn't find an obit for Clara or Ian Mackinnon. There are articles and a picture of Ian M Mackinnon in Montreal, but he is also listed in the Canada's Voters list with a different wife than Clara.
There is an article from June 1942 about "Pilot Officer Ian Mackinnon of Fort Fraser in Northern British Columbia, is believed to be the first Canadian officer in the new Royal Air Force Regiment in England...."

Have you contacted a library for an obituary lookup as suggested in previous posts?
-
Thank you for your response thegabriel. I am certain that Ian married only once and that Clara was his wife so that would eliminate any listing with someone other than Clara.
The 1942 article about Pilot Officer Ian MacKinnon is possibly Ian Malcolm.
And the Ian D. listed at the same address as Clara & Ian M. I would think is a son but as yet I have no knowledge as to the family Clara & Ian had.
Since my first post I have obtained the date of death (from the funeral home)-
Ian Malcolm MACKINNON died on Sunday May 4th 1980. I understand the death notice(s) appeared in the Toronto Star on Monday May 5th and the Barrie Examiner, Monday 5th & May 6th.
[Sandra, yes I have made some requests over the years about this man but until now have not been able to "pin" this family down.]

Hi,
It is always best to post links to previous threads to avoid any duplication or time wasting. We cannot name the son on here because he is hopefully still a living person.
There are "rootschatters" who have subscriptions to the Toronto Star and now you have given dates you have a good chance of someone coming along with the information you ask for

Hello Cosmac,
I felt that I could not approach a library with such a request, as until a few days ago I could not even provide a "ball park" date for Ian's death.
Now that I know the newspapers involved, (see below) could you perhaps suggest which library I should approach?

Hi Sandra,
Unfortunately I don't have the know how to bring up the previous threads as you have done for me.
Thank you for helping me out. :)

You can request an obituary from the Barrie Public Library. It looks like there would be a small charge of $5.00, payable by credit card.

You could also go http://www.canada411.ca there is a Mackinnon listed in Stroud (Innisfil) the same community as Clara lived.
