Title: William Johnstone/Jane Glendinning
Post by: dawnh on Tuesday 04 February 14 23:02 GMT (UK)
Hi there :)

This is my first post, so please be gentle!

My 3rd Great Grandparents were William Johnstone (b.6 Jan 1843, Dumfries, Parents - James Johnstone and Elizabeth Kirkpatrick), and Jane Glendinning (b.abt 1846, Dumfries, Parents - William Glendinning and Margaret Fergus(s)on).

I have quite a lot of info on them, via Scotland's People and DGFHS.

All I would like to know really, is if there is anyone else out there that is researching this line?
Would love to make contact and share info if you are?

Many thanks for taking the time to read this, and I hope to get some replies!!!!

Happy researching  :)

Dawn

Hi Dawn,

Welcome to Rootschat.

I was going to tell you there are 2 Public Member trees on Ancestry which contain the names you are interested in but I note they both appear to belong to you :)

My line of the Johnstone's come from Dumfries-shire but from around the Annan and Lochmaben area's. Johnstone is a very common name around Dumfries, as you have no doubt found.

Don't give up hope, some family member may see your post and contact you.

Regards,

Ian J

Hi Dawn and welcome to Rootschat,

I also have Johnstones  - but only Ayrshire ones - so far :)
Good luck with your research and remember if you've got a query there are lots of folk on this site who will be only too willing to help.

Regards,
Looby :)

Hi Dawn and welcome from me too  :)

The thing to always remember when you post info on the internet is that it stays there for ever and is searchable at any time.

Whilst you may not get a direct contact now, in time to come, hopefully descendants will come across your post through general internet searches and post back here.

Hi guys, and thanks for the welcome!

You are right about the Johnstones! So many of them around that area. William's father James was born in New Abbey, Kirkcudbrightshire, so even thought that narrows it down a little, he is still my brick wall  :( I'll not give up on him just yet though!

Ian - some people on my tree are from Lochmaben - Elliots and Bell are the surnames.

Monica - there just seems to be no one reasearching this particular branch of my tree  :( Am glad I posted though!

Many thanks for your replies  :)

Hi Dawn,

Note your comments re Elliott's and Bell's. I haven't as yet come across any Bell's in my family.

My Elliott's, as far as I have found, originated from North Yorkshire then moved to Co. Durham so I doubt any are related to your family....but you never know ???

Keep plugging away and sooner or later you will find your answers.

Just post a reply to this post and then you will have done 3 posts and you can then use the PM (Personal Message) facility on Rootschat if you wish.

Cheers and good hunting,

Ian

Hi - I have your William Glendinning.  His sister Mary (born about 1780) married James Kerr (born 1771, died november 24 1850) and are my husbands 5x great grandparents.  Sadly I don't have much more about the Glendinnings, as my husband is descended from the Kerr side.  They all lived in and around Dumfriesshire.  But I am looking them up so if I run across anything I'll let you know.  Dianne
