Title: Spring Gardens in Christchurch
Post by: LizzieL on Monday 03 February 14 15:37 GMT (UK)
Does anyone know where Spring Gardens is or was in Christchurch? My grandfather's address was 3, Spring Gardens on his marriage certificate on 16 April 1921.

Thanks for that. I've managed to find Beaconsfield Road on G***le Maps, but no sign of Pound Lane or Spring Gardens. Probably been demolished since 1921.
I have a couple of photos of my grandparents taken about 4 months after their marriage outside what I presume is the house they lived in and wondered if it was the Spring gardens house.

Looking at G Maps - perhaps it is underneath Waitrose  :-\

Hopefully someone local can help.

Pound Lane still exists as a path from the High Street through to Saxon Square, with a couple of shops on it. The area between it and Beaconsfield Road were redeveloped for the building of the bypass in the 1950s.

Hope that helps

Thank you for confirming. I feared that might be the case and the road no longer existed. I have a photo of my grandparents taken about 4 months after their marriage outside a house which might have been this address in Spring Gardens. But if all demolished I shall never know

Hello Lizzie, I lived in Spring Gardens for the first seven years of my life. Our house was the very first one you came to so I assume ours was number 1. My Name is Chris Samways, I believe the terrace was made up of 10 or 12 houses and was slightly elevated so we could look down on Pound Lane. Spring Gardens was approximately situated on beginning of Christchurch bypass as you go towards Somerford. I have some photo's but at present not sure where, i will be looking for them because i wish to build up a picture of my life history for future generations. I hope you are able to read this and if of help please reply, you are the first tangible contact i have found.
All the very best to you
Chris Samways

Hello and welcome to Rootschat.
I know my grandfather's residence at marriage was 3 Spring Gardens, but I don't know whether they continued to live there after they were married.
The two pictures I have were taken in August 1921 four months after my grandparents married. I would be interested to know if the house looked anything like Spring gardens

Thank you. Possibly they were visiting a friend or relative and that house belongs to them. Maybe the friend or relative was the photographer.
