Title: John Carroll Buried St Michael Boston
Post by: Desperate Dan on Friday 31 January 14 16:36 GMT (UK)
Herkes Thomson B 1883 South Shields went to South African after 1881 and changed his name to John Carroll. He married an Isobel Amelia Cross Elandskop, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa and they had 3 children Avis, Nigel and Naomi either Thomson or Carroll as a surname.

Herkes or John was died in July 1 1970 Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa and is buried in St Michaels Anglican Cemetery, Boston, KwaZulu, Eastern Cape, South Africa. Herkes or John upon his death was an ex Police Sergeant of the Natal Police.

Not sure where St Michaels cemetery is but if there is anyone out there in cyber space and could lend assistance to perhaps go to the cemetery and take a photo of the headstone, if there is one.

I took me 5 years to find his family and death. All I had to go on was his name and birth date.

So any assistance is greatly appreciated in breaking down this one brick wall. Would make many distant relatives elated to know of he and his family.

If there is anyone in the area of Boston that could see if there is a headstone for John Carroll or any member of his family would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Neil

Pity I was at that cemetery on the 3rd of January this year. It is situated just out of Boston on the road to Bulwer. I did take some photos but only of my family. Will see if I can get someone to have a look for you. Regards Derek.

Hi Neil

I might just be able to help with regards to John Carroll.
I am a Probationer Minister and I actually go and preach at St Michael's United Church in Boston every second Sunday. Unfortunately I will not be there till the 13th April 2014.
It has a very small cemetery on the property. A beautiful church in the most amazing setting with the most incredible congregation. Some of the congregation have lived in the area for more than 85 years and if he lived and died there they would definitely know him. Will have a look and see if I can find John Carroll or Herkes Thomson grave and tombstone. If you want you can go onto Facebook the St Michaels United Church has a page. I am doing research on St Michael's united Church as one of my projects and stumbled on your plea for help in 'cyber space'. Amazing!

Hope I can help.
Blessings
Ralph

Ralph thank you for your kind offer of looking for a headstone for John Carroll and Isabel Croses his wife. I do have a photo of the headstone thanks to a member of the Natal Midland Memorial group on face book.  However I would appreciate if the church holds any documents of their death, marriage or even the birth of their children or siblings.  Sometimes, the church holds information of this activities in their registry books held in the church.

Again Ralph thank you for your consideration and good luck on your success of your quest in developing the history of the church

Not sure whether you have any of this information.  On familysearch, Africa, Natal provincial marriages there are scans of the marriage of John Carroll and Isobel Amelia (surname Crosse) as well as that of Avis Margaret Smith nee Carroll to a Harry Claud Allpass.

I also found the following at the National Archives

Craig good afternoon from Canada.  I am certainly interested in learning more about John your Grandfather. Based on my research John would be a 4th cousin 3 times removed.

Thank you for your kind consideration for helping me out

Neil
