Just got new lap top running Windows 8.1. I have loaded Office 2013.
I am trying to download a word document (written in Windows office 97-2003) from the internet. It downloads but will not open. Any ideas please.
Thank you for any help.
Jake01.

Hello Jake01,
I have only just seen your posting, having been off doing other things. It is very odd that the latest office won't recognize an earlier version as it is usually the other way around. Mind you, Windows 8 does have a few quirks compared to earlier versions. Earlier today I had a problem opening one of my own documents I had placed on windows live directly in Word. It opened in the end. Are you downloading to your pc and then trying to open or are you trying to open the document which is still on the web? The latter sometimes causes conflicts between two versions of Windows.

By windows office you mean Microsoft Office I guess:
When you down load the file what is the file extension (after the . in the file name, eg doc or docx )
-
Hello falcybe. Yes I download the file to my pc( the file has the "WORD" logo) but will not open in word. I am lead to believe that if I download 'open office' free on the web it will open! But when you pay good money for a genuine Microsoft product you expect it to do the job!

Hello fapeflakes. Yes the genuine Microsoft Office Home and Student 2013.
Extension on the downloaded file: ( docx)
According to the default settings word should open a multitude of extension, this is puzzling me!
-
Hello Japeflakes. I was writing my last post when you sent your last. I will certainly try the address you suggest. Thank you.
-
Do you know the source of the document is OK/safe/reliable
-
.docx should open!
-
Hello Japeflakes. Yes the source is relyable/safe and secure.
I have downloaded file from this source previously on old Vista comp. Now I have got a new laptop running Windows 8.1 and they will not open. Actually with my wife being blind we download magazines of talking books to order from the rnib website.
-
If the download is available perhaps we could download and try it
Have you spoken to the RNIB?
I don't think W8 is the problem
-
Or how about trying this:

-
Hello japeflakes. I have spoken to RNIB and they have checked and it works fine, in fact one of their people as tried it from their own comp at home and it works. I have also check with a friend ours and they say it works ! This evening I will certainly look the two site you have indicated and post my findings tomorrow. Thank you. Jake01.

Good luck
Hope it works
(When it does not open do you get any messages?)
-
ive just sent my cv via e mail and they said it wont open and ive never had that problem before so might be something up - had to cut and past - im not sure what .version. im on but it was also a microsoft word
-
Hello japeflakes. When the download does not open, a window opens which reads: "word cannot open the file because the file format does not match the file extension.(C:\users\ALAN\...New_Books_37.docx"
Yes the download is available at the RNIB website: click " Borrow talking Books" click " New Books Magazine " click " New Books January 2014 " now download and open !
The last Microsoft download site you indicated for " Word Viewer " I think this will open it but should we have to go to these lengths when we purchase and expensive office prog.
Be pleased to see your comments.

The default programme you have to open Microsoft documents might not be the programme you have installed and confirmed on your computer. As an example, a few years ago I purchased MS Office 2007. Subsequent to this I purchased a new pc with Office 2010 pre-installed. Having paid good money for my 2007 version, I installed it on the new pc use it quite happily for most of the time. However, from time to time I have a hiccup because Windows wishes to use Office 2010 to open a file and it says, quite rightly, that I am not allowed to. What I do then is to open my version of office and then open the recalcitrant file from within my (fully paid up) version of Windows Office. Alternatively I right-click on the file and choose: "open with" and select my legitimate version of Office
cheers, falcybe

Hi Falcybe. Thank you for that. I have only one office prog on my comp. This was installed for me by my supplier when I purchase the comp. I do not think that I have a conflict between two versions of office. I understand what you are saying.
-
Have downloaded the file no problem and opened in "Pages" on an iMac
File extension is .doc not docx
Suggestion. Rename the file as a xxxxxxx.doc and see what happens
You will have not lost anything as you can download again from RNIB
-
Hello japeflakes.
Bl***y fantastic! by changing ext to doc from docx it opens up. Yet when I change ext a box opened which read "by changing the extension the file could become useless"..
when I opened it it was fine.
I can't quite understand why changing the ext works because in default mode Windows Office indicates the it should open both doc and docx.
Not to worry it works!!! I thank you for your perseverance with this.

Glad it worked: Not sure everything solved but at least you got somewhere. :-)

Does anyone know how to work Windows 8 please? I just purchased it yesterday and I don't have a clue. I can start it, but what do I do next? please.

Not having windows 8, just enter into search bar 'idiot's guide to windows 8'. :o
Long list of suggestions on how to improve your knowledge on windows 8, includes a U Tube video.

Dont panic LB - it isn't that hard, I adapted very quickly and I know lots of others who have done the same.
How far have you got - you say you can start it, does that mean you have got to the Apps page? You can change it so that the computer opens with desktop every time, which is what I have done.
