Hello, I am new to RootsChat ... I am trying to find out whether there is a plan of Linthorpe New Cemetery in Middlesbrough showing grave numbers. I know the date of death and the grave number, but it is a big cemetery and it would help to narrow down my search. Can anyone help? Thank you!

Hi and welcome to Rootschat ;D
Have you tried contacting bereavement services at Middlesbrough council?

Hi and welcome,
There are several other queries about Linthorpe Cememtery on Rootschat, which you can find by using the Search button at the top. One answer suggests the Friends of Linthorpe Cemetery website: http://www.folc.org.uk/

Thank you all so much for your helpful replies! Eddier, that is such a kind offer of the plan for the particular area of the cemetery. I am looking for grave A1436, where according to an entry in my family Bible, are buried three daughters who died in infancy, Millicent Hood (1881), Florence Hood (1882) and Melinda Hood (1886). Had they lived they would have been my great-aunts. It is also good advice to contact Middlesbrough Council, and to look at the other queries on Rootschat. Thank you.

Visited cemetery today and the area as marked X on attached map is overgrown in places and where it is clearer a large number of memorials are missing and I was unable to locate the grave.

That's really kind of you, thank you. It is certainly a lottery as to whether memorials from that long ago can still be found. Probably this is a dead end(!). I do appreciate your help.

Hi
It may be worthwhile contacting the cemetery office to see if they have notes in the registers as to whether headstones were ever erected on the plot.
Headstones were, and still are, really expensive and depending on the family circumstances may not have been bought and erected.

Yes, that's a good idea. The three girls were infants, it's certainly possible they decided not to go for a headstone. Thanks!
