My father Jeffrey Ernest Tomlinson attended the school and I was trying to find out when. He was born in 1923. Any information would be great. Clare Thorp

Hi Clare
Welcome to Rootschat ;D
Looking at his age - if he went at age 11 then it would probably have been about 1934 until about 1941. Of course he may not have gone until he was 13 in 1936. And he may not have stayed until age 18 - but those are the rough years.
There is a book called:
A Biographical Register Of Old Mancunians
I can't see it free to view online but if you google it you can get copies at amazon, abe books etc. Or you could try getting your library to order it in for you.
It apparently lists entrants with at least their birth year and the years they were there. For later boys there is also some later bigraphical info but that was more post-war according to this site...where you can see an example..

You never know - Perhaps some Rootschatter will be along later who has a copy and can look at it for you...

I wondered when this would come in handy.. ;D There are different editions of the register, I have the one covering 1888-1951:
Tomlinson Jeffrey Ernest b. 13 Oct 1923 attended MGS 1934-1940
then a brief summary of jobs held, ending with an address in Buckinghamshire.
I can type the whole entry for you here if you're OK with it in the public domain, otherwise send me a PM. It's just his further qualifications & work, no personal family details
:) Barbara
PS sorry, should have said, Welcome to Rootschat! PM is Personal Message and you might not be able to send PMs until you've made another post or two, so reply to this post, then I can either transcribe the entry or send it you privately

Good old Rootschat - I knew someone would have it ;D

Awesome Barbara - that is him! If you have time to type up the info that would be great!
Never had much time to discuss the past with him - he died swimming in the far east. I know he enjoyed school and went on to Manchester University during the war. He was an only child so no other family links.
Many thanks

Tomlinson, Jeffrey Ernest, b. 13 Oct 1923 [attended the school] 1934-40
Manchester University, BSc Hons Metallurgy. AIM. Research Metallurgist, British Aluminium Co., 1944-61. Now General Manager, Products and Marketing Development. Field Broughton, Mill Lane, Chalfont St Giles, Buckinghamshire.
AIM presumably a trade qualification or membership of something in metallurgy?
'Now' would be 1965 when the register was published.
:) Barbara
PS, High Master (head teacher) at the time was a Douglas Gordon Miller, b. 1881, d. 1956. High Master from 1924-1945

Thanks Barbara. AIM was, I think, Associate of the Institute of Metals - I remember a very boring looking magazine arriving regularly!
cheers

Why not contact the school? I am sure their archivist will be able to to help you with further information. The entry register will have details of address and probably parents too. http://mgs.org/
