Title: Victorian Deaths
Post by: lisa23 on Wednesday 22 January 14 11:32 GMT (UK)
Hi. I am looking for Mary Frances McKeogh's death (think it is 1925 in Oakleigh) and her husband Joseph Patrick McKeogh death (think he died 1958 in Oakleigh). I was mainly looking for burials for them. I have checked Springvale, Oakleigh, Fawkner, Boroondara. Their daughter Ellen Winifred McKeogh was buried in Melbourne Cemetery in 1928. So I was thinking they are with her. Does anyone have the Melbourne Cemetery burials they could check for me please.

You need to contact the Melbourne General Cemetery's office to find that information.  There is no published resource for MGC burials.

There are no headstones for your people of interest at Melbourne General Cemetery.

Ellen Winifred's death notice does not mention that her mother is deceased so perhaps Mary's death was later than 1928?  Usually death notices mention that a family member is already deceased and in this case Ellen's brothers mention has (deceased) next to his name.  However it may have no significance whatsoever!  :-\

The family are together on the 1924 electrol roll in Oakleigh, but Joseph Patrick is with other McKeogh's in 1931.

If by chance they are interred at Burwood there is no headstone

I think they are more likely interred with their daughter at MGC.

Hi Everyone. Thanks for all the information. I will email the MGC and see if they can help me. The death notice of Ellen Winifred is unusual because like you say doesn't mention that the mother is deceased. I also found some notices of Ellen's brother whom died in the war and they keep putting In Memoriam's in the paper but after 1925 Mary Frances is not mentioned. There are too many errors in Ellen's death notice. All the children had 2 names but they listed them all as individual names. Many thanks for your help.

Not unusual to only have one given name of siblings in a death notice or if both names have been given and listed as individuals, then blame the funeral director or the newspaper.

I wouldn't worry about her mother not being mentioned as deceased.  In that era the father and his occupation was often considered more important.  At times the mother's name is not even mentioned.

What other errors are there?  Her age is correct.

You can't research your family history with newspaper items...you need to purchase a certificate or two along the way to validate any info.

Hi Cando
I agree with you there. Newspaper notices are not always correct but they do come useful sometimes when you cannot find information. Such a learning experience.

I agree however there are also errors in the Victorian bdm indexes and a good example is Ellen Winifred's age at death.  Some of the writing in the registers is appalling so not surprising to find there are errors in the online indexes and CD's.  Of course not all the information on certificates is accurate either especially death certificates.

When you contact MGC give them the date of Ellen Winifred's burial and that may help them find her parents burials ie if they are buried together.  I agree with Ted, the service from the staff at the office at Melbourne is wonderful.  They have often gone the extra mile for me to find old records which were difficult to find as the names were incorrect in their burial register but eventually found them in the burial orders.

Good luck  :).

Years have passed I know, just found your post.  Did you find burial details for Mary Francis McKeogh (nee Larkings)?  She is buried at Melbourne General Cemetery with her mother-in-law Ellen McKeogh (nee Murphy), her brother-in-law Michael McKeogh and her niece's husband Joseph Campbell
