I am trying to find the location of Spring Gardens, Lambeth.
In 1875 my ggrandfather was married at St Marys Lambeth.
Their wedding cert. says they both lived in Spring Gardens, but has no number. There is only one Spring Gardens in Lambeth; it is a small triangle between two longer roads. There seem to be 11 houses in it. In the 1899 Poverty Survey it is classed as poor or very poor. This information was sent to me by my brother.
Could anyone point out, on a modern map, just where it is, or where it was. I do realize that there is every likelihood that it has succumbed to bombing and/or redevelopment over the last 100 years, but having some idea will assist in visualising the area.

If you can locate Spring Gardens on this 1889 Poverty Maps this site has a parallel 2000 map

Kay, thank you very much for that. I had looked at the Booth maps, but could not work my way around them :-[
I finally found Spring Gardens, I think, near the Vauxhall Bridge. The Booth map shows it as poor or very poor, as my brother said. I will have to try to expand the picture to try to locate the actual street. From the 2000 map, it would appear that there has been some redevelopment of the area. That means some more research ::) ::)
Again, many thanks for your help.

Hello, I've just come across your query about Spring Gardens, Lambeth and wonder if you have any further information? I realise it's been some years since you posted but my 4x great grand uncle's address was 2 Spring Gardens in the 1851 census. At this time I imagine the address was quite prestigious as he was Moses Merryweather, the famous fire engine maker. By 1872 he was living at an address in Lambeth - Clapham House, Clapham Common. Searches have turned up a pub/hotel at 642 Wandsworth Road but as he was still the owner of a wealthy company I'm not sure if this is the right place. I'd be interested to learn more about your investigations.

Louise, I think the property 'Clapham House' was to be found the south side of Clapham Common. Looking at the 1871 census and the surrounding properties, you have before the Merryweather household entries for:
Cavendish House
Holland House
Edgar Stables
Clapham House
Gardener's Lodge, Clapham House
...listings then move on to properties on Nightingale Lane
Cavendish Road and Nightingale Lane remain today and easy enough to locate on a modern map. I can also see both houses detailed on the Charles Booth map...but not seeing Clapham House on this yet.
The two houses above were substantial properties with surrounding land. Cavendish House, for example https://claphamsociety.com/Articles/article31-eccentric-scientist.html

Just found it. As you thought, it was a substantial property with surrounding land. Clapham House shows in the top left corner. I think if you google 'Clapham Common West Side' for a modern map, this will show you the area of the original location of Clapham House ( ::) I forgot you can just use the slider on the Charles Booth map!):

Thank you MonicaL - that's fascinating. I'll enjoy exploring the map and when I can get down to London again I'll enjoy wandering around there.
-
Louise, I have not followed that side of the family for some time, but there is very little information about them, that I can find. It is most annoying :-X
Monica, I will have to re-investigate the Booth map, and see what I can find by using the slider :'(

This is the right sort of area:
https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=17.370472208999317&lat=51.45382&lon=-0.15083&layers=168&right=BingHyb
You can scroll around, zoom in and out, and change map series to find one that suits.
AC, I don’t know where Spring Gardens is,but the side by side might help you:

There may be more detail on other maps but none of them name every road, alley etc, but worth checking.
Change map series using the pull down options on the left of the bar just above the map.

Ruskie, thank you for that information.
By using your reference, and the Booth map, I have finally found the location of Spring Gardens, on the Booth map. It seems to be between Albert and Goding Streets, opposite Marble Hall Lane, very close to the Vauxhall Bridge. It is shown as poor, 18to 21 shillings a week.
-
The area is unrecognisable from when your ancestors lived there - but I’m glad you managed to find it. :)
-
Ruskie, using your side by side maps, nowadays, it would seem that the old Spring Gardens are now a bit of greenery under the roadway which seems to be a viaduct from the map.
I stand to be corrected on that, being in Sydney, and viewing from afar.
Again, many thanks for helping solve a problem of some years standing.

AC, have you had a look at the area on Google street view to check out the lay of the land?
Not that it will help you picture what it would have been like for your ancestors.
Sometimes if an address I am looking for no longer exists, I look on the side by side maps and try to find houses which look a similar size on nearby streets. Sometimes they are still standing, so I pop down to street view to have a look. I think with Spring Gardens this is not possible, but it might come in handy for future reference.
-
Ruskie, thanks for the side by side maps. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find Clapham House and several other large houses that existed in 1871 aren't shown either. Perhaps they had been demolished?

Ruskie, thank you for suggesting Google Maps.
Having had a good look, it seems that the street which was Spring Gardens has now been transformed into a walkway under the railway. There seems to be some greenery on either side of the railway, maybe "Spring Gardens"
Thank you very much for your ideas. I will have to try to remember to do that sort of thing again :-[

Hi Louise B21
My family lived at number 4 so they must have been neighbours ! Are the houses still there as I couldn’t access them on Google maps ?
