Hi,
Can anyone help me with this place please ?
At the time of the 1891 census No.27 and 29 Ives Street, Chelsea were lumped together as the London Provincial Dairy.
The street is still there although probably much altered since then.
I'm wondering if anyone has come across any mention of the place or seen any photo's.
Many thanks.

If you Google "London and Provincial" dairy (include the quotation marks), you get lots of hits!
I'm not sure many of them are relevant, though?

Yes, I tried that, as you say - nothing much there !
Thanks for looking.

From "The Lancet" 17th July 1897:
The Victorian Era Exhibition at Earl's Court
. . . . .
The careful treatment of milk and all its products by the London and Provincial Dairy Company was much more satisfactory. Here fresh milk, strawberries and cream, ices, &c., may be enjoyed by the visitor while contemplating cows and calves contentedly chewing the cud in model stables.
And that's about as exciting as it gets! ;D

Ooh, I didn't find that entry.
Just checked again - found it !
Thank-you for that, it's a start ;D

Try this! http://dds.crl.edu/loadStream.asp?iid=56924
It's a report on The International Health Exhibition, 1884.
There are no page numbers, but search for "Provincial", and you'll find a little report starting at the bottom of a page!

Yes, found it thanks.
My ancestor gave the address of 27 Ives St., Chelsea on his marriage certificate so I wonder if the Dairy had accommodation there ?
He wasn't there on the 1881 or 1891 census, just in 1892 when he married.

I did have a look yesterday at some maps of the area but no dairies were marked on the map on Ives Street:

My OH had some people that were in Ives Sreet. I can't remember what number or which census (not at my tree software at the mo)!.
I agree the street is much changed now, but looking at the current layout of numbering and translating that to a map from that approx timeframe (on Old-Maps), it would indicate that the yard area with an entrance on the outside of the corner (as you know, Ives St is L-shaped) would be prime suspect, with the double width building either side being the actual 27/29 building itself. This would make sense for a dairy with a yard for delivery carts, etc.
Will post later when I know which number/year OH's rellies were there and any other info I find.
Edit - Just looked at some later maps and by 1955 the site from the area I highlighted along the entire north side of the east-west arm of Ives Street (that bit towards Mossop St) is shown as Milk Depot, so am thinking that first guess may well be right.

Came across a document on the net for the allocation on numbering for the "Former Dairy Site, Ives Street", which allocated the numbers 27 to 41 to the seperate dwellings that are now there, so it does look like the area I mentioned above. The document was date 1988, so the (extended) dairy lasted until quite recently.
Maybe the local history group (via RBKC) might have more info / pictures.
BTW I looked at my OH's tree and her GG-parents were there from around 1880 to 1893, living at nos 44, 20 then 9 during that time.

That's interesting, I wonder which one was 27 back then.
I expect your ancestors knew mine seeing as they were neighbours !
Thanks for the info.

Not sure if this will work!
I have attached a small extract of the map for the sort of era we are talking about, along with the same area in the 50's showing how the dairy had grown. On this later map I have added a small X to show where no.27 is now.

That's interesting, I haven't found a map yet showing the actual dairy so I'm thrilled to see that !
Just had a look on Google street view and found the current number 27, I suppose there's no way of knowing for certain where 27 was back in 1892 !
Thanks for your time with this.

hi
I lived at 38 Ives Street from 1963 to 1973.
at that time the dairy was still there , it was an Express Dairy then. The main entrance where the carts went in and out was opposite my front door. This was before the original houses were knocked down.
there was a separate office entrance where the street turns south towards Draycott Avenue.
Hope this helps?

That's interesting David, what are the chances of that ?!!
I've just tried Googling it under 'Express Dairy' but still can't seem to find any photo's of the place.
Thanks for the info. though, I'll keep trying !
