Hi,
I have an inscription in a book which I am trying to decipher but am stuck at a few points and unsure of a few words.
This is what I have deciphered so far:
This book is of interest because it
causes the reader to pause & think
about the conscious, unconscious causes
of many of his actions & (Cliches?)
.. taking things for granted
peoples opinion.
.
in itself the (diary?) of a sad journey
Every detail of which (I can?)
.
my heart I am (relieved?) that
.
are returned
.
May time heal the many wounds
Your well wisher G (10?)

Not sure about the "still". First I thought "sloth and" but that doesn't quite fit.

I'm late to this and agree with much of what has been done but wondered if the line transcribed as:
- May time heal the many wounds -
should read
- May time heal this & many wounds

Many thanks to all of the responses.
For anyone that's interested, the book is 'The Psychology of Fear and Courage' by Edward Glover (1940) a 1st edition penguin paperback.
The above transcription was written on the back page, and all through the book are annotations of someone's train journey from Banbury to the New Forest complete with excerpts such as 'Eastleigh 4.15 - blind down, air raid in Southampton'. There are also the reader's musings on the text and even statements about the local ARP meetings and the personalities of those who attend.
It's fascinating, being part mystery and part social history, of both the notes relating to the war and following the original reader's train journey. If only I could find out who the well wisher was!

I've still been puzzling over some of the words because a few don't seem quite right - but don't have anything to show for it :P
I did wonder though if the final letters were initials - G I O - rather than thinking of it as G 10.

Thanks Sami, yes it could well be that.
It may have been 2 different people who had written in the book as it has the initials HC and the date 12/9/40 on the first page, but our well wisher is G on the back page!

Rather than 'Still amid', could it be 'It will avoid'? Fits a bit better with the next part of the sentence, although still not very well with the last part. The 'o' in 'avoid' would have to be very open, as in 'conscious' and 'about' a bit higher up.

I've kept coming back to this inscription as well. Still not comfortable about some words, especially the words that are transcribed as 'conscious & unconscious' and 'clichees'. Also wonder if it was written more as jottings or musings rather than something written in a continuous flow of thought. Here's my suggestion:

It will ...... taking things for granted
& other peoples opinions

Sami you could be right about it being jottings as opposed to prose. Maybe it was the writer's thoughts on the book for a book review, or something of that nature.
There are a few other excerpts in the book where they have written fairly continuously, almost in answer to points the author has made or the reader has formed in his head.
I have a feeling it was 2 different people annotating in the book, I'll post a few more pics tomorrow to show you what I mean
