Title: Did My Joseph die in 1855?
Post by: Past_it on Wednesday 15 January 14 23:11 GMT (UK)
Hi All, I would like to run this past you and see what you think.

I have a Joseph Harrison born 15/10/1815 clerk, and married to Mary Scott born 21/11/1827 they were married in Monkwearmouth 27/3/1847
On the 1851 census they were living in South Shields and had a son Joseph born 4/6/1848. Who later became a joiner.
I am unable to find Joseph (the father) on the 1861 census although I have found a death for a Joseph Harrison in South Shields in 1Q 1855, 10a 275 and a marriage for a Mary Harrison in South Shields in 3Q 1857, 10a 564.
I am unable to find any other children except Joseph.
I’m pleased they had Joseph else I wouldn’t be here!!  :)

Hi

Have you found Mary on the 1861 census under her new married name - is son Joseph with her?

I don't think you have the right marriage - it's on Family Search - groom Ralph Shotton.  Mary's father is John Harrison - should be surname Scott

1861 shows Mary b 1834

1861 Joseph is Josh Harrison living with his mothers Scott family

The GRO index at that time didn't give ages at death, but there is a burial transcription for a Joseph Harrison aged 38 who was buried at Holy Trinity South Shields on the 31st Jan 1855.

Though ages are not always accurate, its a couple of years out for your Joseph?

The marriage that you found, one of the possible grooms was a Ralph Shotten. There was a marriage announcement in the Shields Daily Gazette 15/09/1857, Ralph Shotten and Miss Mary Harrison, daughter of John Harrison. So the marriage doesn't look like it is the right one.

She was Mary Drummond Scott.  Freebmd and GRO index both show her as Mary Drummond but FS has full name

and she re-married in Newcastle
on 19th Feb 1856 Mary Drummond Harrison to William Geddes.
Grooms father was John Geddes, Brides father was a Thomas Scott
source: England & Wales Marriages 1538-1940 (on both ancestry and family search).

From that you should find her in subsequent census years.

So, I'd say you were looking for a death of a Joseph Harrison between 1851 census and 19th Feb 1856.
The one you originally quoted is still a possible, but its still a year or two out given the birthdate you said.

Hi, thank you all for your time and great effort.
Mary was Mary Drummond Scott and her father was Thomas Scott and mother Elizabeth.
I don't have access to the 1861 census records at this time ..... Must rejoin! But I do have the 1871 records and Joseph is married to Mary Hindmarch and with baby son George.
So, it would seem that father Joseph (born 1815) died between 1851 and 1855 ish and his wife remarried in 1856 and they only had one child i.e. Joseph.
Thank you again.

Hi

Re: my reply at #6 above - can you confirm Mary's birthyear and birthplace please.

As Joseph is not with her in 1861 - we need more info to link her to a census entry

Hi Again, like my name I think I was having a senior moment!!
On the 1851 census she is 33, therefore born in 1818 ish. Not sure where I got 1827 from??
On Mary's wedding certificate in 1847 to Joseph it says "Mary Drummond" as her name with father Thomas Scott and on the Freebmd she is listed as Mary Drummond.... Is this a typo?
On the 1851 census she is listed as being born in South Shields but she was married at Monkswearmouth and there is a listing of a Mary Scott born in Sunderland on the 2-5-1818 with a father Thomas .............. Am I confused? Just a bit.
It would be interesting to know where she is born on the 1861 census when she was married to William Geddes.
Thank you all again

Did you check the Family Search entry?

Also - reply #7 shows she re-married as Mary Drummond Harrison
