Title: Holbeck Cemetery - LAYFIELD
Post by: feathersoft on Tuesday 14 January 14 23:30 GMT (UK)
Hello,

I am looking for Betsy Jane Layfield who died 25 April 1963.  She lived at 4 Parkfield Row Leeds.  Her husband Albert Edward LAYFIELD died 1953 and their son Albert Heap LAYFIELD I believe in 1986.  The daughter Elsie married a MULLENDER.

Am trying to find where they are all buried and any other info please.

Kind regards,

Janice.

You could try ring Farnley HalL, where all the burial records are held, unfortunatly they dont allow public to view them anymore, since moved from Lawnswood!! and they can take there time to get back to you, ive had to chase them up numerous times. but if you tell them the names and dates as you have posted they will be able to tell you.

there number is 0113 3957446

Just read a few articles on Holbeck Cemetery and they give the impression it opened in 1847 and closed to general burials 1940  ???

The link below says :- The Friends of Holbeck Cemetery will also try and locate the graveplot for
you and provide photos of receipts/ memorials for a small donation, or FREE if you join our group.

A big thank you for your responses to my query.  I shall try the phone number, though I live in Australia so couldn't manage to get through to the Cemetery when I tried some time ago.
I didn't have the possibility of a second marriage for J.F. Mullender so that is really helpful too.

I shall definitely try the friends of Holbeck Cemetery, that sounds promising.

Kindest Regards,

Janice. :)

If Elsie and Edward Mullender were still living in the Holbeck/Beeston area at the time of Elsie's death there is the possibility she could have been either cremated or buried at Cottingley Hall Crematorium & Cemetery.

Cottingley Hall is on the Ring Road in Beeston. Records for Cottingley Hall are also held at Farnley Hall as weenie suggested.

To Sandra & Ian,

I have rung Farnley Hall and asked about Betsy Jane, husband Albert Edward & son Albert Heap Layfield.  I didn't like to push it, so didn't press for any info on Elsie & Edward J.F. Mullender.  I am to ring back in three weeks or so.

I tried the Friends of Holbeck Cemetery, and though they were unable to help Elsie Tidwell gave me the site for Leeds Council, so I sent an email requesting info on all the "rellie's".

Thanks again to you both for your help and finding Elsie and her husband Edward for me.  I have been searching for Betsy Jane for about 15 years, so it is marvellous to be getting some answers at last.
Kindest Regards,

Janice.

 Hello Sandra & Ian,

Well I got nowhere with my enquiries to Leeds City Council or Farnley Hall for any of the Layfield's or Mullender's.  They are not at Cottingley, Beeston, Holbeck or Hunslett Cemeteries.
I think my only hope now is the newspapers, would either of you know which paper would cover Parkfield Row Leeds in 1963 when Betsy Jane Layfield died as hers is the only death date that I have.
Kind Regards,
Janice.

Hi Janice,

Most people around the Leeds area place their Obituary Notices in the Yorkshire Evening Post.
I believe copies are held at the Leeds Central Library, Local History Dept. Tel: 0113 2478290.

I think you'll find the staff there very helpful.

 Hello Sandra,
At last I have a reply from the Leeds City Council.  They did a search for a fee of the Yorkshire Evening Post and sent me a copy of Betsy Jane Layfield's death notice.  She was cremated at Lawnswood.  I have already put in a query with Lawnswood about the family but did not mention the Mullender's as I didn't want to push it.

Thanks again for all your help.

Kindest Regards,
Janice.
