Title: YEOMANS, Alfred c1856, Ednaston
Post by: magicspice on Wednesday 08 January 14 10:44 GMT (UK)
Please could someone perform a baptism look up for me.

The person is Alfred Yeomans, son of Samuel and Sarah, born c1856 in Ednaston, Derbyshire. Despite multiple GRO purchases I am unable to locate a birth certificate for this individual so I would greatly appreciate it if someone could help me out by going down the parish register route.

Many thanks
Heather

Hi Heather
I can't do the look-up for you but thought I'd let you know that, although civil registration started in 1837, it wasn't compulsory for parents to register births until 1875. Until then the onus was on the registrars to go around their district and make sure they had all the registrations.

So there may not be a registration to find.

Good luck with your baptism search.

Hi,

Cannot find either, but think there is something odd i.e.

Their daughter Catherine born abt 1842, marries as:-
Yeomans Catherine Warne Ashbourne 7b 713   June Q 1862

Looking for her birth there are 2 possibles:-

Dec Q 1842 Ashbourne
Catherine Warnor
Cathering Yeomans

So when did Samuel Yeomans marry Sarah? and where?  Is this his 2nd wife - looking at ages
of children on 1861 Census.

Ok.............first Ednaston is in the Parish of BRAILSFORD....in the Civil Registration District of Ashbourne........Both the 1851 and the 1861 Census clearly place the whole family at Brailsford and then Ednaston...........there are several children before ALFRED..............and interestingly..Sarah born 1819, and Samuel born 1815..may have been married before 1837..........their first child was born in 1840.
The reason i say before 1837 is that the only marriage for a Samuel Yeomans at Ashbourne is 1838..to a totally different woman.............

But the 1861 clearly has all the children..and the family, including Sarah ,are just as clearly very Local........but for the life of me I can't find the marriage in the Brailsford Pr's........

Derek.

Hi

Very true Derek, I have added additional information re the marriage & first Child.

Always think it best to look sideways when you cannot find the obvious.

Will keep looking.

Hi Heather,

Thought it may assist if I summarise what information I have discovered:-

Names of children of Samuel & Sarah Yeomans taken from 1841/1851 & 1861 Census
with their approximate birth years:-

William  1839
Catherine 1842
Joseph 1845
Harriet 1849
Henry  1851
Charles 1854
ALFRED 1856
Arthur  1856
Frank   1859

Christenings which took place at Brailsford Derbyshire taken from transcripts on
www.familysearch.org

               Born                    Christened
William     8.11.1839             30.10.1842
Joseph    17. 9.1846              4.  6.1854
Harriet      2. 9.1848                  -do-
Charles     1.4.1854                   -do-
Arthur       ---                        4.3.1860
Frank         ----                        -do-

Can find no Christening for Alfred.

Civil Registration All in the Ashbourne Registration District taken from
www.freebmd.org.uk  THESE ARE ONLY POSSIBLES

WILLIAM was possibly registered as William Yeomans Dec Q 1839  19 306. If this was him
then I think I am correct in saying that his Father will have had to have attended the actual
registration.  As Samuel & Sarah were not married he should have been registered as
William Warner.

Samuel Yeomans = Sarah 1842 as previous post.

CATHERINE   YeomEns  Dec Q 1842  19  309  strangely there is also the following
CATHERINE   Warnor    Dec Q 1842   19 309

JOSEPH      June Q  1845   19 395
HARRIOT    Mar  Q  1849   19 395
HENRY       Dec   Q 1851   19 389
CHARLES   Jun   Q  1854   7b 471
ARTHUR    Dec   Q  1856   7b 934
FRANK      Dec   Q  1859   7b 468

Samuel Died 1862 and was buried at Brailsford 6.8.1862 age 47
Civil Registration  Sept. Quarter 1862 Ashbourne 7b 251

Sarah Yeomans = Paul Woolley 15th July 1867 Shirley, Derbyshire Fathers
are listed as Robert Womer and Thomas Woolley.

In 1871 they are living Kirk Ireton, Derbyshire
RG10/3577 Folio 59 Pg 5

Paul Woolley transcribed as  47 (but actually 67) born Sudbury
Sarah   "       52                          "      Brailsford
Arthur Yeomans 14                      "         "
Francis         transcribed as  4 (but actually 11)   "         "

How did you arrive at Alfred when doing your research?  Have you found him
on a Census after 1861?

Hi Spendlove,

I have my "Alfred" in the censuses between 1881 - 1911, all of which are after his marriage.
RG14/27626
RG13/4323/19/29
RG12/3781/17/28
RG11/4601/139/57

I know this is the right person. Unfortunately, when he married Alice Kay on 13 Aug 1877 at Silkstone, he did not name his father. I am now trying to be efficient and logical about this and I have ordered all the birth certificates for Alfred Yeomans born in Derbyshire between 1850 and 1862, of which there are several. The logic being that if I can track these people forward to 1881, I should be in a position to rule them in or out. However, one which did not have a birth cert was Alfred son of Samuel and Sarah. There is also an Alfred Yeomans living with his grandmother Ann Taylor in the 1861 census (don't know ref off top of head) who probably needs further investigation.

So that's where I'm at.

Thank you for your awesome summary!!
Heather
