Title: Blunt family - 1841 - 1851 census Please
Post by: J.J. on Sunday 19 June 05 22:45 BST (UK)
I am wondering if I can get help with my recent finds. I used info from census from 1861 & Up, BMD, FamResCtr. & the aid of friends thus far.
I found this death: March 1842 BLUNT Robert- Shrewsbury. Need to know if this is my ancestor? Perhaps I may get lucky & find someone with the 1841 & 1851 census to see where Robert Blunt, retired chemist was living.
...also many blank deaths along the way. Have most marriages...except the ones in blue...& no documents, yet. Missing many children, also...Sorry if there is too much information....but have gotten heck for putting too little(lol)

Hello my genealogy crew!!!  :D :D :D
The above was an attempt at putting more information ...although I think it scared people off as I received no replies...It  does, however, have most of the information on it with blanks of missing info...I have the 1861 and 1871 with Thomas Senior and also Thomas Porter 1871, 1881 and 1891. ( paid for those just before I found rootschat! Didn't know about this site and didn't even know you could view some basic info on the census back then!!! )
I tried to find Robert Blunt in Southwark, so was wondering if he might have moved to Shrewsbury ...as both his sons ended up there, working as chemists...Worth a try, anyway!

Thanks a million for looking things up for me...

Hi Jeany

I've been trawling through the census returns to get the Blunt family straight in my head but I haven't found Thomas and Elizabeth Blunt yet in the 1861 census.

If you have that info, could you post it.  It will help me looking at the later census and make it easier for someone else to look at the 1851 (I haven't got access to that one).

Will follow things up tomorrow.

Best wishes
Monica

Dear Monica....
I had thought that maybe with a bit of luck someone might find Robert & Ann either in Thomas Sr's home or in Henry's home...or even on their own in Shrewsbury. Please don't fret over this, I'll feel badly. I know it can be hard to wrap one's mind over someone else's genealogy...

I've got the 1871 also... for Thomas sr...so the only ones that I would need for him would be the 1851 or earlier if there is such a thing...?  Jeany

I've popped into this thread too!!!!

I see that in 1871 Thomas Blunt was living at 111 John Place.  Can't say that I've heard of that, but there is a St John's Hill which could possibly be nearby.

When I take your photos Jeany, I  have also got to take a couple of St John's Hill so will have a nose round for John Place.

Maybe Monica is familiar with the name?

Hi, Jan I am just looking at the actual images of the census, and the 1861 said St. John's row or Tower Place...The numbers were from 30 to 35 and Thomas sr. was in 35.....But I just looked at the actual image of the 1871 and it distinctly says Tower Place...I suppose the T does look like a "J" but that was transcribed wrong!
I never  looked to compare before as I always refer to my printed images.  I asked
for the typed file just in case I couldn't read some things...

Well on that census. the addresses go from 111, to 115...Hmmm... I think I will put up the other 2, also...

Hi jeany and jan,

I've had a look at the other sheets in the 1861 census to look at the route the enumerator took to try to place to address.  This is the route:

Quarry Terrace, Quarry Place, St John’s Row, St John’s Row or Murivance, St John’s Row, St John’s Row or Tower Place, Crescent Place, Crescent Lane, Crescent Gardens, Crescent Cottage, The Crescent,  Belmont, Belmont House (a school), Belmont Bank, Town Walls (2 houses), Belmont, Milk Street.

Jan - does that help narrow it down for you?  I must admit, I'm not entirely enlightened by it - obviously some of the places have changed names over time.  It looks as if Murivance and part of Town Walls used to be called St John's Row???

Jeanie - there are often two numbers relating to each property on the census - the one in the left-hand column is the schedule number and just relates to the census, if there is a house number it will be in the address column - so in the 1891 census 60 is the schedule number and 28 the house number.

Good luck with the photos,
Monica

Hi all

Possible deaths:

The one you found - ROBERT BLUNT    d. Mar 1842, Shrewsbury, 18 - 164  and
ANNE BLUNT  d. Jun 1847, Shrewsbury, 18 - 149

You really do need some kind person to look up the 1841 and 1851 - they should be in the one and not the other if these are their deaths.

Monica

Thanks, Monica, I don't know how I missed Ann in my searches.  That may well be the ones, and yes, I will need to see the early censuses...Patience is a virtue, and I have time.
(Jan has put a bee in my bonnet....and Now my husband is getting the bug from me that England would be wonderful to visit. I had better be careful...or we'll pull our savings for our old age and pop off to the Island!!! It is so tempting!) jeany

I found Thomas Porter Blunt and his wife Emily Rachel Blunt nee Robinson with her mother Augusta Robinson in the graveyard at Shrewsbury (general cemetery). I've put the photos I took on the Findagrave website. The grave is not in great condition and Thomas Porter Blunt is right at the bottom. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/272339056/thomas_porter-blunt (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/272339056/thomas_porter-blunt)

I think that Robert Blunt was probably buried in Swan Hill chapel graveyard. He was a deacon there.
Robert was a "dissenter" so he wouldn't have wanted to be buried in St Chad's as he would have to have had a Church of England vicar taking the funeral service. I'm not sure where the records for Swan Hill burials are. The original chapel was demolished and a new church built in 1862. Interestingly his grandson Thomas Porter Blunt was selling an "iron church" that can hold 400 people in 1877 (which may have been where the Swan Hill congregation met between the demolition of the old chapel and the building of the new church). At the time the general cemetery in Longden road, Shrewsbury (where his son, grandson, etc are buried) wasn't built (it opened in 1856 and was open to dissenters and church of england).

Robert's home was "Tower Place" in 1841. He lived there until his death and it then passed down to his descendants. Thomas Blunt would have grown up there, then moved out when he married, then moved back in after his father's death. If you type in "tower place" into the British Newspaper Archive (which gives 3 free views per email address) the Blunt's come up in many articles.

Thanks once again for all your input ILEXSALOPIA. Please note that this thread was started almost 20 yrs ago!
No more religious discussion, please! I am from small-town mid-Canada. Many different religions in town but all got along. I have to admit that I wasn't aware of the term dissenters, or the offshoot religions it created until I started looking further into the past. People angry at each other due to a difference of so-called "faith"? UGH!

Hello again ILEXSALOPIA. Here I really must apologise to you for not properly acknowledging your interest in the Blunts. I just saw the extensive work yourecently added to the find-a-grave site, and it honours him, and his work, beautifully.  Cannot thank you enough for all that time & effort!

Sadly my old website, many years in the making as a gift to my Mum, who was always disappointed at the lack of recognition for his efforts...was removed by the host. My replacement one never really picked up steam. Your information, having been added to a popular website will make sure there is something to find!

(❤️ Thank you, Thankyou, Thankyou! ❤️ In Perpetuum Gratiam ❤️ To all who've helped me!)
