Hi,
I am looking for the family of Emily Elizabeth Laws b1847 Stanner married Henry Haddon 1871 in Hull.
Thanks.
-
There is no one showing on the birth index's under that name born Stanner Wales 1847
Clould she have been born under another name ? illegitimate perhaps. :-\
What other information do you have on her that might help please
-
The 1881 gives her place of birth as Stanner, Norfolk - are you certain she was born in Wales?
-
The 1911 also gives her place of birth as Stanner, Norfolk! ;D
1901 census (RG13; Piece: 4504; Folio: 174; Page: 30) has her born in Yarmouth.
-
Have you got her maiden name from one of the children's birth certificates? If not it could be that she was married previously and that Laws wasn't her maiden name. I cant see a birth of an Emily Laws or any trace of her before 1881.

Thanks for your help.
It is possible she had been previously married and widowed, but as she was married to Henry Haddon when she was 24, it's probably unlikely. She gave birth to James Henry Haddon in 1872.
I only thought she had been born in Wales, as that was the only Stanner I could find.
Apparently Stanhoe, Kings Lynn, Norfolk, is pronounced Stanner. Interestingly there is another family connection to the Kings Lynn, Grace Emma Ringwood b 1865 at West Winch. Although I have no direct connection at this stage.
I wonder why the 1901 census has her born in Yarmouth and the 1911 has her born in Stanner?
They are about 50 miles apart.
If the possible match found by 'groom' is correct, I assume she will not appear on the 1871 census with Henry Haddon in Hull?
Is there some connection to Amelia Eagleton 2? or was she just an aunt?

as she was married to Henry Haddon when she was 24, it's probably unlikely.
Unlikely yes but certainly not impossible, I,ve known widows as young as 18
You cannot take anything written on the census's as gospel, until you have proved them yourself as any seasoned historian will tell you, things were often wrong, most folk were illiterate, spoke with regional accents so the enumerator wrote down what he thought, also some folk had no idea exactly where they were born, so was often written down as the place they either thought or were living at that time.
I hope this goes some way to explaining your doubts.

The Amelia Eagleton in 1871 appears to have been registered as Amelia Laws March 1870 Norwich 4b 136.
You would need to get her certificate to see whether her mother was Emily or perhaps her younger sister Amelia. I cant see a Laws/Eagleton marriage.
I'll ask a mod to move this to the Norfolk board as you may find someone there who has access to the parish registers.

Thanks, my head is spinning with trying to research the options.
