Not buried at Ballarat and if at Ballan there is no headstone.

Ah...born prior to Elizabeth's marriage to George Thomas GURNEY
This suggests to me an illegitimate birth with the father named.
ADAMSON Charles William
Father -- Mother Elizabeth ADAMSON
At Ballan 1858 Reg#1845R
MILLS Charles William
Father John Alfred Mother Elizabeth ADAMSON
At East Ballan 1858 1845R
The R means absolutely nothing if purchasing a certificate. It indicates that the birth registration has been transcribed to the index twice.

Buried at Ballan Cemetery

TROVE has some mentions
Inquest into death of child Violet Mary GURNEY (sister of William Charles), after falling into a cooking pan of hot fat. September 1869
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/89701574
There are a couple of mentions of a Mrs GURNEY as a caterer in Ballan but not specific enough to know if it's Alice.
In memoriam notice for 'my dear mother Alice M GURNEY' inserted by "Annie" The notice is on p18 not p6 which is what came up for me. (I see now that cupoflife has already given this reference :-[ )

There is a digitised WW1 record for
Harold GURNEY Born - Ballan VIC : Occ: farmer
Place of Enlistment - Melbourne VIC :
Next of Kin - (Mother) GURNEY Alice
The fact that his mother is named NoK is unusual if his father is still alive. However there is no notation and, as he returned from o/seas and collected his own medals there would not have been a need for the Army to contact his mother.
William GURNEY; age 29; born - Ballan, is also listed on the NAA site but there does not seem to be a file for him.

Can't see a death for an Owen or Andrew HANDY; someone with better resources might find it.
Annie HANDY, hd, is on the 1903 electoral roll living at Durham (Vic). No others of that surname at that adress.

Hi again,
I am by no means an expert on the Gurney family, so any info is greatly appreciated. I do know a bit about my Great grandfather though and so I'll put some links etc below for anyone who may be interested.
My Great Grandfather was in the NZ Army and saw action in Galipoli, his number was 12/2718. He died in 1958 and is buried in the RSA section of Papakura Cemetery, Auckland. When I lived in Auckland I used to visit his grave every year on ANZAC day. I have attempted to attach a picture of his grave stone, but I don't know if I have done it right.
Here is a link to his Service Record: http://muse.aucklandmuseum.com/databases/Cenotaph/44834.detail?Ordinal=6&c_surname_search=gurney
And here is a link to an article I wrote where I mention him. I am an Anglican Priest here in New Zealand and the site this areticle is written on is run by myself and a couple other priests. I add this link because on the article there is a picture of him, and also a picture of one of his medals he recieved for services during WW1, I am unsure if it will interest anyone, but here it is nonetheless: http://revtalk.co.nz/2012/08/too-high-a-price/
I do hope to connect with more family, and look forward to especially hearing from Alan.

You dun gud getting the picture in first timer :D I wouldn't have been able to as a newbie ;D

Hi Chris
The info about your g-grandfather is very interesting. Even though we are not part of your family R'chatters tend to be 'gene tragics' ;) :D who enjoy the research as well as being interested in the lives of others.
