Title: Smith Adams
Post by: shoshannah on Tuesday 31 December 13 16:52 GMT (UK)
Hi all,

I am trying to find the name of Smith Adams' mother. Smith was born in Royston 1900

His father is Arthur Adams, born 1874 . Census' list his wife (Smiths mother) as being Margaret R Adams.

I am told by Smiths Grandson that his grandmothers maiden name was Flack. However I cannot find any records of a Margaret R Flack. Is anyone able to shed any light on this while I am waiting for the certificate to arrive?

Thanks,

Shosh

Arthur's wife is listed as Margaret R in 1901 and in 1900 March Qtr 3a 595 in Royston there is a possible marriage of an Arthur Adams and Margaret Rosina Collins

Thank you for your reply Kay.

This was the conclusion. I had come to as well, however his Grandson is adamant that his Grandmother was not a Collins!

Guess I will have to wait for the certificate to arrive!

Thanks again,
Shosh

Dear Shosh,

Following on from what Kay99 has said I found the following :-

1881 Census - Property in Orwell Road, Royston - Adams Family fathers's christian name is Smith - Wife and seven children including Arthur aged 7

1891 Census - Property The Plough Inn, High Street, Shepreth, Cambridgeshire - Collins family including Margaret R Collins aged 18 listed as a barmaid.

1900 - Marriage in Royston of Arthur Adams and Margaret Romina Collins

Best Wishes,

Fifthwheel

In 1911 living in Fulham were
John Collins 48 b Peckham
Elizabeth Collins 50 married 23 yrs, 5 children 4 living, b Shepreth
John Collins son single 26 b Sydenham
Mary Collins dau 6 b Fulham
Margaret Adams visitor 38 marr 11 yrs 2 children both living b Shepreth
Smith Adams visitor 10 b Fowlmere
Cecil Adams visitor 3 b Shepreth

John Collins appears to have married Elizabeth Collins in St Saviour in March 1888

All of which seems to firmly link Margeret and Smith to the Collins family. But I would be patient and wait for the birth cert.

I am told by Smiths Grandson that his grandmothers maiden name was Flack. However I cannot find any records of a Margaret R Flack. Is anyone able to shed any light on this while I am waiting for the certificate to arrive?
My reading of what you've written is that Smith Adams married a Flack (although I can't find such a marriage), not that Smith's mother was a Flack.

However his Grandson is adamant that his Grandmother was not a Collins!

Smith's grandson is right. The grandson's grandmother, ie Smith's wife, wasn't a Collins. But the grandson's  great grandmother was. You're confusing generations.

You were right when you say that Smith's mother was Margaret Collins, and Smith's grandson is right when he says that his grandmother wasn't a Collins. You've misunderstood the generations. The grandson's grandmother was Smith's wife, not Smith's mother.

Sorry, yes you're right. My brain is one tangled mess of names!

Smiths SON says his grandmother, Smiths Mother, was a Flack, not a Collins.

Thanks,
Shosh

On Free BMD there is a Arthur Adams with a Maude Flack on the same page, marrying in June quarter 1895 in Saffron Walden district. In fact they are marrying each other, as I have found the other two together on the census. But I can't find Arthur and Maude on the census.
