Title: Missing on the 1891 Census
Post by: tom mix on Monday 30 December 13 07:06 GMT (UK)
My family is James Cahill, wife Sarah Ellen & Daughter Ellen (Helen).

I have posted on here many times searching for them. Given he was a mariner & the family may have been out of the country, is there any administrative reason why I cannot find them in censuses e.g. books destroyed etc.

Last known area of abode was Epsom and Ascot Sts in the Bootle area.
Luckily I still have most of my hair but I am at the tearing out stage.

Someone might know !!
Thanks
Alan

Only too happy Heywood !

James Thomas Cahill, no birth cert., but born to Thomas Cahill & Bridget Brereton approx. 1867.
1871 Census RG10 piece 3814 folio 132 page 33 living with mother & brother Richard.
1881 Census RG11 3571/70. BUT as Jas Whitmore on board the "Clarence" a reformatory ship on the Mersey. Mother had re-married.

Sarah Ellen Williams born 3 Oct 1870 to William Williams & Ellen Fox.

Marriage  of James Cahill to Sarah on 14 June 1887 at St Anthony's Scotland Road.
Daughter Ellen born 12 November 1888 Towson Rd Everton

Absolutely no sign of the family in the 1891 Census. Many have searched !!!
Sarah disappears around 1895 and no sign of her since.
James re-appears in the 1901 Census, 117 Towson St Everton, with daughter (helen) and supposed wife, Margaret though this marriage did not take place until 1902. I have the evidence.

The two questions I keep posing are:
* where was the family in 1891
* what happened to Sarah Ellen

Please accept that we have followed all the logical steps of enquiry. It will take a lucky connection out of the blue to solve this one.
Please go for it !!

Alan

Hi again,

I see I have searched previously and have seen the marriage of Bridget but didn't know husband- thanks.

Just a note- James is in Kendrick Street in 1901 -not that it helps.

Heywood  :)

Apologies! You are correct. James was in Kendrick St in 1901. I wrote Ellen's birth place an additional time. Shows you what Xmas with 7 grandchildren in the house does for your sanity. :D

Not sure if you have these already, but Ancestry has baptisms for James and Richard.

James at St. Michael's:
Anno 1866 die 16 mensis Julii natus et anno 1866 die 29 mensis Julii baptizatus est
Jacobus Cahill filius Thomae
et Birgettae Cahill (olim Reordon?) conjugum:  (writing difficult to decipher)
a me J Tobin??
Patrinus fuit Johannis Cahill Matrina fuit Maria Cahill

Richard at St. Anthony's:
Anno 1868 die 28 mensis September natus et anno 1868 die 4 mensis October baptizatus est
Richard Cahill filius Thomae & Brigidae
Cahill (olim Brerton?) conjugum:  (writing difficult to decipher)
a me Johanne Daly M.C.
Patrinus fuit Richard Start? Matrina fuit Sara Start?

James's entry gives what are probably another couple of family members. Might be worth following them up for 1891.

Thanks for the continuing interest.

The marriage of Thomas to Bridget in 1863 looks great.

The maiden names of James & Richard's mother appear to be different, Reordon & Brerton. If the parents were married in 1863 surely the maiden names should be the same ?

I will follow up both sets of godparents on FindMyPast.

Best I can do so far!
On Liverpoolhistoryprojects website:
1862 Marriage: @ O L Reconciliation  Robert Starrs to Sara Keogh. Apparent godparents at Richard Cahill's baptism.

Found them in 1871 Census @ Whitely Street Court Liverpool as Starr
No sign of them in later censuses. Cant find any later link to my missing James Thomas Cahill & wife Sarah Ellen.

The search goes on !

Do you have the Williams family in censuses?
I see them in 1871 but that is it. I wanted to check them in 1891.

Ignore that- remembered about the Curries

Have you given the full background searches that have been found for this lady and family on other forums, a lot of work has been done by others and it would be a shame to have the work duplicated.

I note that Bridget Cahill married as Bridget Elizabeth.
Do you have her death certificate?

There is a possible death in 1893 - Bridget E Whittmore which would mean that she should be in 1891 index. I can't see her either  ???

Hi !
Each time I have updated my request for information on the whereabouts of Sarah Ellen Cahill, I have stressed that I have been looking for her on various sites for a number of years. Putting her name in the Search area of the site should let people see all the information already gathered.

Heywood, No, I have not got got Bridget's Death Certificate. However, I can tell you this:She died in October 1893 and was buried in a public grave in Anfield Cemetery, RC section. She was 49 and had been living at 20 Orry Street. It is possible she was living with son Richard at the time and her death cert. might throw light on James' whereabouts, if he had been the informant. Perhaps I should purchase it !
I do have her marriage to John Whittemore of Dryden St in 1874 but I gather you already have it.

Thanks everyone

Alan
