Title: tips on searching...
Post by: Klb16 on Monday 30 December 13 00:36 GMT (UK)
any tips on searching for relatives that may have mistranscribed surnames, I tend to be missing out on a lot just because they have been mis transcribed, what kind of search terms should I enter when searching?

thanks

Less is better than more

When I found your Aitkens mistranscribed on the 1901 (previous post) I just used David b 1890 plus or minus 1yr

Yes - it threw up a lot of entries but with a surname beginning with A it wasn't a massive task

Use the wildcard search (eg) A*tk*n

As well as the use of wildcards naming other household members can often help.

As above with a specific place of birth sometimes works.
