Post by: lmel on Sunday 29 December 13 16:49 GMT (UK)
Can anyone help I have been searching for the birth of Ralph Briggs who was born in Lisburn in 1831. His mother was Jane Keary and his father Robert Briggs Ralph came to Scotland and married in 1859 any Information would be appreciated L Mel

You've posted in Antrim Completeed Requests so your post might be noticed right away- just click on 'report to moderator' and ask for it to be moved to ANTRIM board.

1831 is well before the start of civil registration (1864) and church records might or might not survive showing a baptism. Do you know what religion the family would have been?

Hi they were Protestant

Protestant doesn't identify what church they would have attended- you need to know denomination (Church of Ireland, Presbyterian, Methodist, etc.) and then check what church records are available for that period.

Sorry It would have been Presbyterian

Presbyterians aren't at all restricted as to which church they may attend so there could be quite a few choices since 'Lisburn' could mean the town itself or somewhere in that vacinity.**

If you do find records of his baptism the details may be scarce- usually child's name, date of baptism and first names of both parents or perhaps just father's name, sometimes townland listed (usually not all those details will be listed).

** PRONI, Belfast do have some microfilmed church records covering that area and period-

Many of the records you will probably want to look at are more likely to be in PRONI, Belfast rather than Lisburn itself.

Let us know if you have any questions.

Hi Imel  :)

There are Briggs recorded in Magheragall C of I, Lisburn registers and several graves containing Briggs in the graveyard.  I cannot find a Ralph though around the time period you have given.

There was a Ralph Briggs who lived in the Knockmore area of Lisburn who died aged 62 on the 26 September 1877.  He is interred in the Cathedral Churchyard, Lisburn.

Hi Joe

Sure no problem.  As a newbie you need to post a couple more posts, just to this one even just with a smiley face.  Then you can send a PM (private message).  Send me your email address by PM and I will forward the pics to you.

 :DHello Maggie.

This is post number 3.  My wife is the facebook expert so I'll pass the link on to her.  Besides, she's the "Hamilton" in the family.

I forgot to place on my list a third name.  Martha Hamilton's maiden name was Greer and I found her father listed in the graveyard as well.

The names are:

William Hamilton - Died June 28, 1886
Martha hamilton -  Died May 30, 1923
Andrew Greer - Died April 3, 1889

Thank You,
Joe
