I am trying to trace the family of William Edward Greenwell, born 1899,Lanchester.Would appreciate any census details.Thankyou.
-
Hi Corpust
His Family, do you mean: his wife and children, descendants - or his parents, siblings, ancestors?
Do you have him on any Census?
A little clarification will help us to better help you , and avoid us spending time looking for details about him that you may already know :)
Cheers

Interesting this is the only Marriage that I could find that fitted;
Dec 1877, Wakefield, 9c 75
Joseph GREENWELL/Eliza MEAKIN
She would be very young if married 1877 and wondered why they would marry in Yorkshire.
Could William Meakin age 12 in 1901 be her Brother?
1881 we have;
Joseph GREENWELL, 27, Head, Mar, Coal Miner, born Novia Scotia, Durham
Eliza, 21
Joseph, 6mths
Trish :)

Look like William Meakin may be Elizas Widowed Brothers Son. I will have to investigate that more.
-
So they were GREENWELL in 1881 & 1911
And BROWN on 1891, 1901.....

It does seem I`ve been chasing the wrong William Greenwell.Ours married Charlotte Smith in 1922 and he died in 1963,in Heworth. There were no children, hence the lack of info.
-
Very odd indeed ???
-
The William Edward GREENWELL, birth registered Lanchester Dec Qtr 1898, whom we have been following….son of Joseph & Eliza/Elizabeth... we are pretty certain the census, marriage and 1971 death we have found is the same man. But BMD documents would prove it .
In your original posting, you said your man was born Lanchester 1899. Where did that information come from? Did you know him to have a middle name?
MARRIAGE: Mar Qtr 1922, Chester le Street
William GREENWELL
Charlotte SMITH
DEATH: William GREENWELL, age 74
Dec Qtr 1963, Durham NE
No middle "E" or "Edward" evident on either the death or marriage.
Given the above, I'd say the chances are, your William GREENWELL could be the one whose birth is registered as follows (and as it happens, in the same year and qtr as the William Edward in Lanchester we've already looked at):
BIRTH: William GREENWELL, Chester le Street, Dec Qtr 1898
On the Census, the one most likely to be him this lad ( & Pelton comes under the Chester le Street registration district):
CENSUS 1901: Bowden Terrace, Helmington Row, Durham
RG13 - Piece 4651, Folio 13 , Page 18
Head: William LANE 57, Coal Miner Hewer, b N.K., Lancashire
Wife: Mary A LANE 53, b Shildon Durham
Son: John LANE 30, singler, Contractor/ Cartman, b Bowden Close
Dau: Hannah GREENWELL 21, married, b Bowden Close
Son: Joseph LANE 13, Contractor/ Cartman, b Bowden Close
Dau: Rose LANE 14, b Bowden Close
Dau: Matilda LANE 5, b Bowden Close
Grandson: William GREENWELL 2, b Pelton Durham
MARRIAGE: Jun Qtr 1898, Auckland, Durham, on same page:
Sarah Hannah LANE
John White GREENWELL
MARRIAGE: Mar Qtr 1906, Auckland, Durham
Sarah Hannah GREENWELL
To: Christopher LIDDLE
And as follows, I believe to be one family:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XWHL-64S
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XWHL-643
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XWHL-647
Use the links to the search tools I gave you earlier to determine if the above 3 are all in same household.
This seems the likely match to your William GREENWELL, but unless there is information in the above census etc that matches what you know of your William, then the marriage cert to Charlotte will (hopefully) be the necessary 100% proof you need, to ensure you're on the right path.

I think you have found the William Greenwell I have been looking for.Thankyou.My original post was based on only a hunch, plus relative`s memories of him.Apologies for sending everyone on the wrong path.William and Charlotte had no children, which made the research a more difficult task.

The area at north Fatfield and Harraton colliery was called Nova Scotia. I was told that at one time a huge influx of Scottish miners came to work at the pit, which was one of the oldest in the country. The miner who worked at the pit called it Cotia not Harraton and pronounced it 'Cosha.'
