I need to find out where George Jones was from, I'm really stuck.
1939 - Died in Rhymney, Bedwellty, Monmouthshire
1925 - Lived in Rhymney, Bedwellty, Monmouthshire
1914 - Living in "
1911 census - Living in " with his wife, Esther. Recorded as born in Breconshire
1901 census - Living in Llansaintfraed, Breconshire with Esther. Recorded as born in Moccas, Herefordshire.
1891 census - Living in Breconshire with Esther. Recorded as born in Breconshire.
1883 - Married to Esther Evans. At Llandeilo-Graban, Radnorshire. Father recorded as Thomas Jones, recorded as living in Treberfen.
circa 1859 George Jones was born.
This is as far as I can get. The 1881 census has many George Joneses in Breconshire, most are servants so I can't find relatives. There are even more of them in Herefordshire. So I'm really stuck. What do you think I should do?

Hello,
what was Thomas' occupation on the marriage certificate?
1861 has a George born Llangattock with father Thomas - a carpenter
Think I have him though in 1881 and he is a carpenter.

Hi
Who were the witnesses on George and Esther's marriage
Margp

Sorry for the late reply!
On the marriage certificate, George Jones is listed as living in "Treberfen Parish of Llangasty Tallyllin" in Feb 1833.
The witnesses were Richard Handley and Mary Ann Davies. I don't think these are blood relatives.

Do you have his father's occupation from the certificate?
1881 has a Richard Handley, 25 yrs a farmer's son born and living in Llandilo Graban, Radnorshire, the place of George's marriage.

Hi all, back in 2013 I posted about my struggles to find where George Jones had come from. We didn't solve it then but maybe we can do it now we are more experienced!
Where did George Jones come from?
circa 3 Apr 1860 - George was born
1883 - married, living in Treberfen, Llangasty parish
1891 - birthplace Llanfrynach, Breconshire
1901 - birthplace Moccas Herefordshire
1911 - birthplace Llanfrynach, Breconshire
It seems to me that either he was born in the llanfrynach area and 1901 is an error or he moved into the area from herefordshire before marrying in 1883. So far no joy from chasing witnesses to the marriage or possible leads in other censuses.
---for your info if you wanted to look these up---
m. Esther Evans (b.1862)
children: William, Mary Anne, Caroline J, George, Edith, Johnny and Frances

Well that's funny. I asked the same information then. ;)
So we have Thomas - is there an occupation?
-
marriage in Llandeilo Graban, father Thomas Jones, labourer.
-
Thanks :)
-
Sorry for slow replies.
George's father was Thomas, a labourer according to the 1883 marriage. He was not recorded as deceased so he may have been alive in 1883.
-
As you know his fathers name - have you looked for him on the 1871 census? You only mention 1881 in your earlier post

In your previous thread you have George Jones born abt 1859.
In your opening post here, you have ‘circa 3 April 1860’ . Where does that date come from?
George in censuses
1881 - 19 yrs - abt 1862
1891 - 34 yrs - abt 1857
1901- 39 yrs - abt 1862
1911 - 50 yrs - abt 1861
Does the April 1860 date come from 1939 record?
-
Probate entry address ties in with 1939 entry. Persons names on probate entry match 2 of his children so looks like birthdate is correct
-
Thanks Carole.
There are few George Jones around in that area at that time. Not many Georges either if he was born with a different birth surname.
There are some single Thomas Jones.
It’s a puzzle.
-
Yes I'm pretty stumped by it.
There is an 1881 census return which shows a George Jones (b.1862 in Llanfrynach), single and servant to Thomas Jones' family in Llangorse.
Sometimes I wonder whether that's him but can't be sure? What do you think?
-
The 1861 & 1871 censuses are the ones to concentrate on. Finding him with his family is needed to progress further

Thanks Marg! This could be him. But then, so could some other entries? And Monmouth is a fair bit away from wherelse we have him.
This reference to Moccas is really confounding me.

He may have moved about at an early age and was not sure where he was born

Thank you for your help everyone! I think I'll have to follow breadcrumbs on possible leads and see if I bump into Moccas again on any of them! Here goes... :)
