I have recently discovered that my Henry was the son of Henry Brindley and Elizabeth Hall.
Thanks for the clues. everyone. I haven't had much time for research lately however i am back to it now. If anyone has information onf Henry and Elizabeth I would be grateful

Hi Holly, could you check the entry for Henry Brindley marriage 1790 and tell me if the spouse was Elizabeth Hall.
Thanks you kind regards Phyllys

This marriage in Pallots index took place 40 years before the period 1837-1839 you specify. FreeBMD coverage 1837-1839 is complete for the GRO civil registration index except for the quarter December 1839. Checking the actual GRO index for that quarter there were no Henry Brindley marriages - so it looks like your marriage may very well have been pre civil registration (starting 1st July 1837)

Dear Valda, thank you for taking the time to look this up for me and and replying to my query.
It's interesting because Henry joined the army in 1839 saying he was 21 years of age. So it is possible he was married very early. He joined the army at Salford. His army records show he served 21 years 43 days in active service, 14 years 5 months overseas in India and Sth Africa.. He was discharged, King William Town, Dec 1859 and finally discharged from Chatham Hospital June 1860. He came to Australia in 1862 with his daughter Susanna aged nr 10 yrs. It's difficult knowing which years he spent in England. I only have an extract from his army record so it may prove helpful for me to obtain a full copy.
Again thanks for the information kind regards Phyllys

So it is just as likely he married abroad or if he married before an army chaplain even in this country his marriage would be in the overseas registers (not all of which are indexed for the army). You can view the overseas GRO indexes at 1837online - they are not covered by FreeBMD.
If he joined the army in 1839 (whether he was 21 or not) it is less likely he was married, as that basically would be to leave his wife. There were quotas for married men's wives travelling with their husbands. As a young man straight into the service he would less likely to be able to take a wife with him.
If his daughter was born abroad her baptism and birth registration may be in the overseas indexes so I would search for that first. If he was in India then both marriage and baptism may be in the indexed in the India Office records held at the British Library.
Henry's army service would tell you where he was and when.
