Does anyone have any information on Thomas and Kate Finlow, of Leicester around 1920's. As i understand they had a son in 1922 (Thomas)then Thomas snr died and Kate remarried a Mr Bates and had more children. So young Thomas became Thomas Finlow-Bates, he married Lillian Wagstaff. She is still living and is my daughter-in-laws grandmother. They had a son Terry who has passed away. I am asking for information on Thomas and Kate on behalf of Terry's daughter (my daughter-in-law)who now lives in New Zealand

Are you sure Thomas died and Kate remarried?
Because I see this marriage -
Jan/Feb/Mar 1923
Leicester
Ref 7a 407
Thomas Finlow to Kate Bates
Looks more as if Thomas was born prior to the marriage.

Not seeing a birth for a Thomas Finlow around 1922
There is a Thomas Bates though.
I think he was born Thomas Bates, to mother Kate Bates (either illegitimate or she was previously married), then Kate Bates married Thomas Finlow and he added his stepfathers surname to his to make Finlow-Bates.
To confirm this theory you would need probably to get some certs.

Hi
If the son (ie: the husband of the still-living grandmother of your D-I-L) is the gentleman who passed away in 2003, with a recorded dob 25 Aug 1922, registered in Leicester - his birth could have been registered Sep Qtr or maybe the Dec Qtr of 1922 (if the dob is correct, that is!). That would fit with the Birth found under BATES in 1922, The mms for that birth is FORDER.

Not seeing any BIRTHS for FINLOW mms BATES either, post the 1923 marriage or mms FORDER?
PROBATE: Kate FINLOW died 22 June 1960, widow of 34 Porter Street Leicester died at Hillcrest, 2 Swain Street, Leicester. Admin 11 Oct 1960, to Leonard BATES Plasterer, £4047, 4s, 5d
Her death was registered Leicester, Jun Qtr 1960 : Kate FINLOW age 80 (born abt 1880). If this is her then in 1923 on marrying FINLOW, she was age abt 37.
She may have been widow FINLOW for many years, if this is her husband:
DEATH, Thomas FINLOW age 49 years, Reg Jun Qtr 1928, Leicester.

So it appears, your DIL's grandfather was illegitimate - in as much as his mother was an 'un-remarried' widow BATES, nee FORDER when he was conceived and born. His birth registration shows a middle initial of F. This could be for FORDER or for FINLOW - if the latter (you'll prob need the Birth Cert to find out), then highly likely Thomas FINLOW was his natural father (and himself *perhaps* not free to marry Kate prior to their 1923 marriage).

Thank you everyone, It does appear I have the families in the wrong order ::). First came Bates and all the children then came Finlow with the one child. Even with my mistake you have given us sooo much more information. She will be wrapped to have some names for her tree and to know which line to follow. :) Poor Kate widowed twice with so many children.

My DIL very impressed with speed of all this new information ...as am I!!! She said yes she can remember her father talking about Porter Street. Thomas Finlow was born in Salford and going on age at Death around 1879. I have found a reg birth for Thomas Finlow first 1/4 that year (Thanks for the free BMD web site). Brilliant!
Wow Willsy that's really cool.....I think if my husband went off to war :'( and left me with 5 sons I'd go home to Mum too!! ;) or did mum moved in?
Have searched also for marriages Forder and Tarry. It appears Charlotte Tarry married Fredrick Forder in the 4th quarter of 1878. Now looking for birth and death.
D-I-L also said that Charlie Bates (1916), who was Thomas Finlow-Bates's half brother, the youngest of the Bates children, married Lillian's (Thomas's wife) sister.
Thomas apparently called himself Bates not Finlow-Bates most of the time as he was a partner in a Plastering Company with his half brothers.
