Title: Anyone know the layout of Redcar cemetery?
Post by: Roobarb on Monday 16 December 13 23:39 GMT (UK)
I've recently found out that a couple of my ancestors are buried in Redcar cemetery and was hoping to have a look at the grave(s) as it's not a million miles away. However, the council wants £2.50 just to tell me where the grave is.  >:(

I wondered if anyone knows the rough layout and could tell me where to look for graves from the 1950s. I know the 'GravesRUs' ladies used to go there but am not sure if they still use Rootschat.

Would be grateful for any help.  :)

Perhaps you could try the local Library to see if they have film of the Cemetery burial records and grave plans. You might also find plot details to see if anyone else is buried in the same plot.

Although it is very fulfilling to have hands-on research, it is not always practical. For most people the sum of £2.50 would be a bargain, and I think they would get more than the grave position.

Personally I would give the Council a ring (Cemetery and Cremation) and see what happens. I've had several answers from extremely helpful staff members. Family History gets a lot of support in my experience.

I'm pretty sure the burial records are held at the NYRO at Northallerton. Redcar and Cleveland Council has just put their burial records on Deceased Online, the £2.50 charge is for a map of the grave location. Other details are chargeable separately, the name of the deceased and the date of burial (which I already know) is £1.50, a burial register scan is £2.00. The cemeteries office (I think they call it Bereavement Services now) certainly used to be very helpful but I think they might be in trouble now if they supplied the details free of charge.

If I lived in a different area then I may well be willing to pay £2.50 but when it's only down the road I really don't want to do that! It could prove quite expensive if I found a number of ancestors there. I'll have a mooch around if all else fails.  :)

Would it not be worth having a walk in the cemetery and seeing if there's any members of staff there , who could help you?
I work in a cemetery myself (not Redcar and Cleveland so it could be different) , and if a member of public comes to me asking to find a grave - i'll either find it for them , or ring our office with the relevant details. Our office then supply me with a grave number - and i then locate the grave .

I don't know if Redcar and Cleveland  have staff in their cemeteries through normal working hours , but maybe it's worth a try?

Thanks for the suggestion diggerman2. I was once looking for a grave in the huge cemetery at Middlesbrough and a man who was working there was very keen to point me in the right direction. However, I did know the grave number. I don't think there are usually any staff in Redcar cemetery, only when they're digging a grave. I'll keep an eye out though when I go for a look around.  :)

Your post did prompt me to have a look at the Friends of Redcar cemetery website, they have a digital cemetery. I searched for the surname and it did find some entries but not unfortunately for the people I was looking for. An interesting website nevertheless.  :)

Ceeoh, it was the Deceased Online where I found the burial record but they want payment for the grave location details.

Bsiggyme, I haven't had chance to visit the cemetery yet so haven't found what I was looking for. Will try to remember to post here if I do find the graves.  :)

Hi Roobarb
I think I have something which may help.   I have a layout of Redcar Cemetery showing plot numbers, which I obtained many years ago when researching my in-law family.  Sorry I had forgotten all about it.  It shows what plot numbers are where, so if you know the plot numbers it should be useful. If you will PM me your e mail address I will scan it and send it to you.

Thanks Bsiggyme, that's very kind of you.  :) I'm actually only a few minutes away myself (by car) but have had so much going on lately I haven't had chance to get there.

Ceeoh, I don't know the plot numbers, that's the bit I'm not willing to fork out for! I've had to put my familyhistory research aside lately but I'll try to get down to Middlesbrough soon and look at the burial records. However, I will PM you with my email address as I'm sure the layout will come in very useful, thank you.  :)

Deceased on Line burial records - pay to view give you date of burial name last address plot number and name of person who conducted the service. If there is more than one person in the plot it also tells you who . There's also a Friends of Redcar Cemetery who will probably be very helpful if you email them  http://www.redcar.org/friends-of-redcar-cemetery-the/
