You had to be wary of drink as well  :o. The first schedule of the 1872 Licensing Act lists the "Deleterious Ingredients" or banned additives that were being used to adulterate drink   http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/Vict/35-36/94/schedule/FIRST/enacted

In most cases the substances were used to increase the intoxicating power of the drink, but a few were used as dyes.
