Title: The Drill Hall, Huddersfield
Post by: singingsusie on Monday 09 December 13 18:39 GMT (UK)
Just a brief request for help - during WW1, does anyone know how many Drill Halls there were in Huddersfield?
Many thanks in advance.

Susie- I don't know the answer to your question but would guess at several. There would perhaps have been a drill hall in each neigbourhood eg Lockwood, Bradley.
Maybe staff at the Local History section of Hudds library might be able to help.
Or try a request on the Rootschat WW1 board.
Also, in WW1 the regiment most involved with recruiting and hence drilling etc in Huddersfield was the Duke of Wellington's West Riding Regt. Maybe try their museum in Halifax?
Good luck.

This may help http://www.drillhalls.org/Counties/CountyPageYorkshire.htm
There's an A - Z list.

The main Drill Hall and the one they called the Drill Hall was just outside the town centre and is still there and is next to the university.

Many thanks for your various suggestions.  I was aware of the Milnsbridge one and one down by the University, but have read recently that another Drill Hall was established at the top end of town in the Springwood area.  I have not used the WW1 rootschat, so will post on that, and also nip into the Local Studies Library.  Thanks again.

I came across this thread earlier today, and tried the link by heywood.  It is still accessible, and when I delved further, to try and give them some information re 2 Drill Halls in the old West Riding, the email address is no longer recognised.  So my information could not be added.

Hi

The one you could be on about could be what they used to call Rifflefields. This was the early muster point for the local militia and contrary to a lot of beliefs it was in situated in what is now the Greenhead Park.
