I have been searching for a marriage record on the Civil Reg. Indexes and found 4 males and 5 females which match. It should be 4 males/4 females I thought. Any advice please on where I go from here

Can you give us more info please.
Names, dates, places would be helpful.
Someone might have access to the parish records to check for you.

It does happen sometimes for perfectly good reasons- if one of the names is unclear (John Johnson & John Johnston, for example) or a woman is listed with maiden and previous husband's surname (Mary Jones & Mary Smith). Another reason for different numbers of males and females on the same page can be that one was been mis-indexed (Mary Jones volume 2 page 136 married John Johnson volume 2 page 186).
If you give us the example you've found it might be clear what it's all about.

These are the males George Maude, William Stuart, Joseph Spencer, and Samuel Clarke
The females are Eliza Bryan, Alicia Cugley, Eliza Earl, Eliza Martin, and Mary Anne Walker
The marriage was 1875 in Gorey, Wexford and they all have the same VOL. no 2 and page no. 735

That's unfortunate as there are 3 Eliza's,could be that one of them is listed with her maiden and married surname,as Aghadowey suggested. Or a mistake in reading the page number.
Who is your ancestor and do you know who they married?

More than one way to skin a cat ;D
Joseph Spencer & Mary Anne Walker children:

William Stuart & Elizabeth Earle child:

1901- Samuel Clarke is a widower:

A George Maude & wife Eliza here in 1901 but quite old- but nephew with surname Martin in household- perhaps 2nd marriage for each?
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Wexford/Ardamine/Doughal/1793677
Added- think George's 1st wife could have been Jane Roberts.

Thank you Carol & Aghadowey .
I was trying to pair William Stuart with an Elizabeth Walker. Possibly Elizabeth Earle was a widow when she married. Aghadowey could you please tell me how you managed to discover Elizabeth Earle was William Stuart's wife as it certainly defeated me.

It's really just a matter of knowing what records are online and which ones can sort out the problem.
FamilySearch has many, not all, extracted Irish births 1864-c1881 so I started searching for the men as fathers of any children born in Wexford which led me to the Stuart child. From there I searched the 1911 census (which gives number of years married for married woman) and the details matched.

Thanks Aghadowey.
I had just found Samuel's birth with the mother's name included. This would rule out Elizabeth Walker as on the census it states they were married 36 years .
thanks for all your help.
