Hi,
I am looking for some advice.
I am pretty new to parish baptism records. I have just looked on find my past and I think I have found the baptisim of my ggg grandfather John Herbert. However on the baptism record his name is down as Hubbart. Does anyway have more information on how baptisim where recorded. I have done a further search and there are a few Hubbarts in the Plemonstall area but no Herberts. How could this name change happen.
I could be going down the wrong route but it seams to much of a coincidence. I am led to believe John Herbert ( Hubbart) could have possible been illegitimate.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

baptism = 2 records
marriage = 2 records

interestingly the 1832 marriage of Henry Hubbart to Anne Barnes at St John The Baptist in Chester ,shows Henry Hubbart abode as Nottingham ....could they have originally been a Nottinghamshire family ??

Hi,
Does anyway have more information on how baptisim where recorded.
The priest would ask the mother her name, he would write down what he thought she said, and as she was probably illiterate, she would not know what he had written.

Try the parish chest ( overssers accounts / vestry notes etc) , the mother may have applied for relief / finds to support her and the child!
These will be at Chester Record Office.
