Title: Mitchell/Buckley Family.
Post by: Faye567 on Monday 02 December 13 22:28 GMT (UK)
I'm looking for some more information on the Mitchell family from Dublin. My grandfather Valentine Mitchell was born in Dublin in 1909. His father was James Mitchell and his mother Christina Buckley. However, I don't know much about the family beyond that. I think James' parents were James Mitchell and Elizabeth Dunne. I would love to know more about the Mitchell and Buckley families. I'd also like to solve the mystery of what happened to my grandfather's younger brother Patrick, who seems to disappear from family memory after the 1911 census. I can't find a death certificate for him.

Also more generally what are the best places to contact for record ordering and church books in Dublin? I have experience finding records in Westmeath and Belfast. But, this will be my first time really trying to find my Dublin based ancestors. Many thanks for any answers.

have you tried for the death cert of a Patrick Mitchell died 1911 Dublin South age 0 he appears to be buried in Glasnevin age 3 months but ages on deaths in Glasnevin are not always perfectly accurate.

Thanks so much for that. Yes, I do think that Patrick Mitchell is most likely correct. Strange that I've never found that before.

Thanks again! I'm starting to get a better picture now, I think. I have found Patrick Buckley and Elizabeth (nee Willis) in the 1901 census still living in Martin's Row.  I've also found their marriage in 1864 in Chapelzoid. Patrick's father is given as James Buckley. Strangley, Elizabeth's parents have not been recorded. I have never seen that before. Does anyone know of any reason for this?

possibly an orphan and would'nt know who her parents were.
but the civil cert might name her father.

Patrick's mother hasn't been recorded either by the looks of it. The rest of the entries on the page are full, strange.

Looks a decent possibility. In the 1901 census, it says that Elizabeth cannot read or write, whereas, her husband and all her children can. I know this wasn't  uncommon at that time period. But, could be another indicator of a rough childhood?

Having studied the page more carefully i think there is a great possibility that its just a case where the ink has faded it also appears on some of the other marriages on that page so as i say if you buy the civil cert you will know for certain.

Really? It looks like it's just not been recorded at all in Elizabeth's case to me. Civil cert seems to be the best bet.

if you look at where it says James Buckley there is an x after his name which means'' and or Et'' then there is an M which i believe is the start of the mothers name which is possibly Mary as in the Buckley /McDonald marriage in 1865 both of these marriages are recorded twice in different books possibly rewritten because of water damage , above the page on the 1865 marriage it specifically says ''damaged text''.

Thanks! Yeah, that's the right people. I found a marriage for Patrick and Eliza that lists Eliza's father as Anthony Willis. So, I have a start there now too.
