I am trying to trace the baptism of my mother, born Eleanor Hoggarth in March 1901 a few days before the census, in Ellel, near Forton Lancashire. She was the youngest of 7 children.
According to the school records her brothers and sisters left Forton school at Easter which was in early April that year, so presume they moved around that time, to Moor Green farm, Whitbeck in Cumberland. There may not have been time to have her baptised before they moved.
In 1903 her father Lancelot Hoggarth died of pneumonia aged 47, in Whitbeck, he had been ill for a month. It must have been a very traumatic time for the family as her grandfather, another Lancelot Hoggarth, died aged 77 just 3 days before his son.
At some stage my mother was 'adopted' by John Bargh Garnett and his wife Ann Elizabeth who were members of the family. She next appears on the 1911 census as Eleanor Garnett adopted daughter of John and Ann, living in Leck near Kirkby Lonsdale. She may have been adopted soon after birth or perhaps when her father died. I don't know where or when she was baptised and if it was as Eleanor Hoggarth or Eleanor Garnett. If I can find a baptism it may help show when she was adopted. Incidentally on her Marriage and death certificates, she is shown as Eleanor Hoggarth.
I would be glad of any help. Thankyou

There was no formal adoption until after the Adoption Act 1926
Probably Eleanor was just referred to as an adopted daughter but was never formally adopted -which is why she would keep her birth name at marriage - this is not uncommon

Her Birth is Reg as Eleanor Hoggarth, March 1901, Lancaster, 8e 704
I cant find any of the Childrens Baptisms/Christenings on Familysearch/FreeREG/Lancs OPC.
They may have been non-conformists

Do you know where they were married in 1885?
Launcelot Hoggarth and Sarah Jane Ormrod Jul-Aug-Sep Kendal Westmorland.
Perhaps they used the same church for christenings.
-
They are the correct parents, Heather, very easy to follow, Lancelot around, Kendal, Westmorland, Cartmel, Lancashire, etc,
-
Hi Radcliff
I just thought that the children might have been christened at the church where the parents were married. I can see the family in the census.

Many thanks for your replies and interesting information. I do have a lot of details for this family, I always knew my mother as Eleanor Garnett and it's only in the last few years I have traced her birth family, so this has opened up a whole new line of research.
Trish. that's an interesting thought about them being non conformist, I hadn't thought of that.
Heather, I haven't been able to find any information on the marriage of Lancelot (b1857) to Sarah Jane Ormerod apart from it being in 1885. I have looked on BMD and on familysearch.org, but as I am an amateur at this research I may be looking in the wrong place. I have also not being able to find records of Sarah Jane Hoggarths death although I have seen her grave in Levens churchyard.
Radcliff, I have details of the gory accident which happened to Lancelots servant.
The details of the marriage you have posted of the daughter of Lancelot (b1826) raises an interesting point. You have her name as Jennie, in the 1861 census, there are two girls, Agnes and Jane. Do you think Jennie and Jane are the same person. :-\

:D
Looking at the 1891 census,
I would say Jane is Jennie,
and from my patio window, ironically I can see the back of 18 Nelson Street, the house they lived in , quite big terraced houses, compared to the rest of Dalton, if you have a phone I can send a photo to, send me your phone number via a private message, and I will send it tomorrow, its a bit to dark now,
-
Radcliff, how kind of you, but I'm afraid my phone is a very simple pay as you go mobile phone. I am too old now to cope with the modern up to date ones!!

:D
Never mind you can Google Earth , 18 Nelson Street , Dalton - in Furness, its the original row ,

I've found some info on Sarah Jane Ormrod / Hoggarth's Death.
It seems She moved to Manchester in her later years and died there and was then either moved to LEvens for Burial or Buried at Manchester and maybe a Headstone was erected at Leven's for her ? I'm still looking into it but i'll contact you Trishanne with more info.
