Hello Scott,

I take it you have some document that states Ronald Ross, parents are Jonn Ross, and Margaret MacDonald, ie a marriage certificate or death certificate of Ronald's.

It looks like Ronald Ross, was married twice although no record for his first marriage to Dorcas, that i can find.

It looks like he married a Ann Mcleod, 25 /Dec/1856. Kilmuir, by Uig, Inverness, do you have this marriage, this would most likely state if his parents were alive or deceased.

Do you perhaps have the maiden name of first wife Dorcas.

This sort of information may help you go further back.

Regards,
Jonn.

Thanks for the tip Jonn. Dorcas's maiden name was MacKinnon, so that appears to be the next line of inquiry.

Thanks once again.

Hi

Suggest you look at Scotlands People as there is a death for Dorcas Ross showing in 1855 in Kilmuir, Inverness. Death certs in that year contain a lot of detail. As well as parents any children are recorded.

William

Hello Scott,

What seemed to have happened, Ronald Ross, and Dorcas Mckinnon, had a child Dorcas Ross, born 18/June/1855. Kilmuir.

Its quite confusing the child seems to be registered Dorcas or Gormhuil Ross, father Ronald Ross, mother Dorcas or Gormhuil McKinnon.

It looks like Dorcas Ross, died after the birth, then in 1859. the child Dorcas Ross, died aged 4 years.

When a married woman dies in Scotland, from 1855. onwards you usually find her death under her married name and her maiden name on the search engine on Scotlandspeople, however the Dorcas Ross, who died 1855. Kilmuir, is not coming up with the surname Mackinnon, or any variation of that name.

Regards,
Jonn.

Hi

I am still looking for info regarding John Ross and Margaret MacDonald if anyone can help. I have spent a lot of time on Scotlandspeople with no success.

I have come across an entry in a book called "One Hundred and Five Songs of Occupation from the Western Isles of Scotland" by Frances Tolmie which refers to Mary Ross (my Great Grand Aunt), daughter of Ranald Ross. In this section there is reference to her"...gentle grandfather, an old soldier of the Peninsular War". I wonder if anyone has any tips on obtaining any possible military records at this time?

I would still love to obtain more info on John and Margaret especially, if anyone can help with regards to their parentage.

Kind Regards

Scott

Hi Folks,

I am still trying to find out more information on John Ross. I have recently been on Scotlandspeople and have come across the following details on a death certificate,

Name: John Ross (Widower)
Date and Place of Death: 27th December 1857, Earlish (or Carlish), Snizort
Sex: Male
Age: 73
Father: Angus Ross, Tenant (Deceased)
Mother: Gormil Ross nee Ross (as far as I'm able to make out)
Cause of Death: Asthma
Buried: Burial Place, Uig
Informant: John Ross, son

I am wondering whether this is our man? If not, then I could tick this one off my list.

Regards

Scott

Hi John

I don't know if its a glitch in the SP system or it has changed but if you search for Dorcas - died 1855 and Kilmuir,  the two surnames come up - Ross and Mackinnon with the same reference.  She was aged 42.
