Title: Woollen mills Huddersfield area
Post by: Milliepede on Wednesday 27 November 13 23:00 GMT (UK)
Just wondering if there are any mills left that one could go visit?  I know the one my ancestors likely worked in has been demolished but would be interested in learning more when I next visit.
Any suggestions gratefully received, local history museums that kind of thing.  I have been to the Tolson Museum.
Thank you  :)

Hi

You could try the Colne Valley museum but I don't think it is what you are looking for .
I think there is a mill museum in Lancashire but sadly nothing in the Huddersfield area that I can think of.

Hi
The Industrial museum at Eccleshill Bradford is not too far away and has all the equipment and machinery that was used in a typical woollen mill. It is even located in a textile mill complex.

There is this - probably only about an hour's drive from Huddersfield

What about a trip into Leeds?
Well Armley, easy to get to from motorways.

Saddleworth Museum in the Yorkshire village of Uppermill about 8 minutes by car from Marsden.  The Lancashire one suggested could be Helmshore (Cotton).

Helmshore does seem to cover wool also - I checked before I posted and just checked again.
Uppermill is now part of Oldham and is Greater Manchester - although many folk still regard themselves as belonging to Yorkshire.  ;)

Uppermill and the other Saddleworth villages are part of the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham.  53% of the Oldham Borough is in Yorkshire, and 47% is in Lancashire. In the most recent past signs confirming the above have been erected on the boundaries of the Saddleworth villages. They are pale blue in colour, feature a white rose and the name of each village.  It is some years since I visited Helmshaw and recall the cotton production.  I was not aware that they now include woollen, although it is quite a trip from Huddersfield and the Colne and Holme valleys.
