Title: Consett - Blackhill Cemetery World War I death
Post by: Ian in Canada on Tuesday 26 November 13 01:48 GMT (UK)
John Walton WHITE died in 1918 as a result of injuries received in World War I.  He is buried in "Consett Blackhill and Blackhill Old Cemetery".  I would love to have a photo of his memorial stone and any other info about him.  Any and all help would be much appreciated.  He was closely related to my WHITE grandfather, and his parents were Pattinson and Elizabeth WHITE.  Thanks.

just to note that Pattinson was married twice,,,,Elizabeth was his second wife,,who he married after John was born,,,,so it is likely that Johns mother is in fact Pattinsons first wife,,Caroline  Proud,,who he married in 1878 in Northumberland.

Where was Tin Mill Street?      My Gt.grandfather James Currie Draffan was living at No.6 Tin Mill Street in 1871 when he was aged 24, year before he married Jane Robson.     But in 1891 when your White's were there, the family had moved to Durham Street, Blackhill.   I've just been looking at an Old Map of Blackhill but cannot spot it.

I've just had a look in The Consett Story.   Page 34 - in a list of Blackhill Residents for 1894 -
WHITE, PATTINSON, BUTCHER, TINMILL PLACE.

Tin Mill Street seems to be close to the Tin Mill School, Derwent Street, Blackhill.

Ian
I've attached a PDF of the White family burials in Blackhill cemetery and a shot of the family grave you inquired about. John and his parents were buried in plot 813, Section 11. They are all commemorated on the 3-tier, white marble memorial shown in the attached pic.

I have another, more detailed, shot of the part of the memorial referring to John; I'll attach it to my next posting as it's too large a file size to go with this one.

Are you sure about his second Christian name, as there appears to be a disparity with that shown in the burial records?

I apologize for the low quality of the images; I took them earlier this year as part of a photographic recording project of the headstones for transcription purposes. The strong sunlight and deep shadows caused severe contrast problems.

Ian

Second shot attached as promised. The memorial reads as follows:-

In Loving Memory
of
JOHN W. WHITE
The dearly beloved Son of
PATTINSON and ELIZABETH WHITE,
who died April 21st 1918,
aged 30 years.
Died at Portsmouth Military Hospital
From Wounds Received In Action in France.
Peace Perfect Peace.

John's inscription is on the front of the plinth and his parents' inscriptions are on either side. John obviously pre-deceased them by several years.

Pat, since writing my previous message the pdf. has been read.  It's very obvious that you have put a great deal of work into photographing the memorials and listing the inscriptions.  It's very
impressive !!  Thanks again. Ian

Tin Mill Place is  clearly shown on the Blackhill and Shotley Bridge 1895 edition of the Godfrey map, http://www.alangodfreymaps.co.uk

I find these maps very useful in local family history research and they are well worth purchasing if you are trying to track an old address of that period - I have no relationship with the Godfrey organisation, but I admire what they are doing and use their maps quite regularly.

Tin Mill Place no longer exists. I think it was finally demolished in the 1970's. Blackhill CIU Workmen's Club and some small industrial units now stand on the site formerly occupied by Tin Mill Place (fronting onto the road), with Eltringham Street behind it and Blanchland Street (all now gone) behind that.

Thank you Keith.  I did buy that map and two others from Alan Godfrey's of Leadgate and they were sent promptly.    You need to modify your post and take out your email address as we are only allowed to give it in Personal Messages.   Malcolm

In yesterday's message from Malcolm33 he indicates an interest in the Turnbulls of Northumberland and Co. Durham.  My great.grandmother was a TURNBULL born in Northumberland.  I have details of her birth and marriage but am having difficulty pinning down her death.  Perhaps Malcolm33 would like to compare notes with me about the Turnbulls ??  Ian in Canada.  (born in Newcastle).

There are many Turnbull lines in Northumbria and the Borders, Ian.    I'll send you a PM with my email address and we'll see if we can find the elusive death details of your gt.grandmother,  Malcolm in Melbourne (born in Consett).
