Title: Frank Charles Preece - Gloucestershire, England to Alice Springs (maybe)
Post by: Preece67 on Friday 22 November 13 20:17 GMT (UK)
Frank Charles Preece (my great uncle), was born in Newent Gloucestershire in 1888. I cannot locate him in the 1911 UK census. He is believed to have travelled to work on/run a farm, it is thought in the Alice Springs area? My father remembers letters arriving at home from Alice Springs when he was fairly young - he was born in 1935, so I guess I'm looking at 1940's? There is a Frank Preece named in an online document - Residences for half-castes - Alice Springs (1943-1954) - but I have no concept of what this may mean, though it does say he is european. Is there any way of finding more out about this gentleman as it looks a possible lead? Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give, I am somewhat in the dark about Frank.

Thanks to you both for replies, Charles was from Herefordshire originally and moved into Gloucs when he married Ellen, he had died by 1899, Ellen was ill and the children were scattered across relatives and the workhouse at various times. Frank had a brother in the army and a sister who moved to Canada.

This does look like a good lead.  Unfortunately Northern Territory records are difficult to come by, with almost none of them on-line.  TROVE, the digitised newspaper service has nothing for him either so I'm unsure how you can proceed.

If you look at the White Pages (telephone directory) there are 7 entries in Northern Territory, with the surname TILMOUTH, one of which has the initial of one of the children mentioned in the link.  There are also some PREECE entries.

Alice Springs cemetery may have some information:

The Genealogical Society my be worth a try also

Thanks for those further leads. Searching through Google books and similar, I see several mentions of Ruby Tilmouth, not sure I'll ever get to the bottom of this!

Some of the files mention the TILMOUTH family and their background.

Australian Electoral Roll
1943, 1949
TILMOUTH Ruby Woods  Alice Springs  Home duties
and a number of other TILMOUTH's

The fourth child on the linked file was enrolled to vote in Alice Springs in 1980 along with the above Ruby and others.

From one of the links….............and Ruby Tilmouth and her daughters Nelly Budeja and Joan Tutton, who were all born at Ranparane [Old Station Well, south east of Mount Riddock, homestead].

Joan and a Joseph TUTTON enrolled to vote at the same address to 1972 in NT.

The Tilmouths are a v/very large family group in Alice Springs and surrounding area.

I suggest contacting the Alice Springs Public Library mailto:library@astc.nt.gov.au and the Alice Springs office of the NT Archives mailto:nt.archives@nt.gov.au  as both of these have extensive information on people in Alice Springs.  Alice Springs wasn't that large in the late 1940s and early 1950s (following WWII - when it had a large military population).

Thanks to both Stuart and Cando for those replies, very helpful. I will follow the advice and write to the offices named to see what help they may be able to give.
